Roadmaps to 5TB HDD's?

Afternoon all, it's been quite a while since my last visit, apologies etc. Family life leads little time for my PC interests it seems these days...

That said, i'm keen to expand my current home NAS storage.
My Synology DS410j has 4 x 2TB drives ( = 5 1/2 TB useable) and i'm thinking of buying 2 x 4TB drives to swap in (which will be fully useable under Synology's Hybrid Raid).

That said, i'm keen to know if 5TB is really on the horizon (not least, to bring down 4TB prices).
I'v seen this article on The Reg that talks about possible Seagate 5TB drives at the end of this year, but i wondered if there was anything more concrete, or from other manufacturers etc?

Well, a quick Google search revealed what you said.
WD to release Red and Green 5TB end of this year, Seagate next year beginning. You can wait if you like.

5TB WD Red drives would be pretty awesome

Definitely need to get my server up and running again, been way too long, missing having network access to all my DVDs. The kids are at a stage they would really benefit from it too.

Indeed, although i cant seem to even find Red 4TB drives in stock at present, i wondered if they wait to certify the Red's for reliability etc - if so, Red 5's (surely a cool nickname? ) wouldnt be out so soon?

Apparently 5TB enterprise class HDDs will be the first to come.

If the early 4TB drives were any indication, at launch 5TB drives will be 'blow-the-flipping-budget' expensive. So much so, they won't drive 4TB drive prices down in a hurry.

Given your current config and usable space, I'm guessing you are using some form of parity raid. My advice; buy 4x4TB drives and get it over with. Then, at all costs, avoid looking at HDD prices.

Got to be RAID 5.
For home use RAID 10 is a waste. Or partial RAID 1.

Eventually I'm looking at rebuilding my server with a RAID-5 array (8 disks) for bulk media serving and a RAID-6 array (again, 8 drives) for more secure files, documents, backups, etc.

Not a fan of raid5 for home use - drives have a nasty habit of dropping from arrays if you use any type of power saving. Personally use flexraid as it allows spindown of idle drives.

As per my sig, i have Synology DS410j NAS. I use SHR config (im not why anyone wouldnt really) so i can swap 2 drives only and still get the benefit.

Why bother with two separate arrays? Wouldn't it make more sense to pool your storage into a single RAID6 set? That way you lose just 2 disks on parity data instead of 3. Even if you still want to partition 2 separate filesystems you can still do that.

Well I have two PERC-5i cards and a PERC-6. I could just use one set of larger drives, but I already have 8x 1.5TB drives and 8x 1TB drives that I could make use of too.
