Yes, SSDs are 'faster' in just about every sense, though check what you are using it for. The best thing about them is that they are faster for most of the every day tasks that normal people use their computers for - ie in the real world.

For some SSD reviews see the latest posts in the sticky: http://forums.hexus.net/storage/2068...ws-thread.html

We tend to be quite performance oriented at Hexus, so I would expect something like the samsung 840 to be recommended.

    Re: New SSD

The Samsung 840 EVO is a nice compromise between performance and price.

It comes with a transfer utility on CD which helps you switch data between drives.

If you buy the laptop kit, it comes with the cable and connectors to plug in either of the laptop drives into a USB port (though not a caddy).

    Re: New SSD

I would suggest a Samsung 840 EVO.. I personally own one and they are just amazing. Although 840 Pro claim to have a longer life.. but I honestly doubt you will be using the SSD for more than 5 years or so which is well within it's MTBF.

    Re: New SSD

Anandtech Bench is a useful thing: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/758?vs=742

as you can see, the 840 Pro out performs the kingston. They only reviewed the 256GB plextor http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/631?vs=665 . Again the 840 pro wins

Another thing to watch out for, rather than just the performance benchmarks is how the drive behaves over time once it has been fully written to, and is having to clean itself to write new data. Anandtech did a really good article on this a while back: it's to do with write amplification and can be found here http://www.anandtech.com/show/6489/playing-with-op

whichever drive you get (unless on enterprise grade stuff) set the capacity at approx 10% lower than available and your drive should run faster (or rather speeds not deterioriate to the same extent) over time. And yes Trim helps, but it is not a fix all - best I can do is point you to the article.

It's also worth considering an SSHD. They are not as fast as SSDs but, in most everyday tasks, it's difficult to notice the difference. I've just put a 750GB Seagate Momentus XT in my rig, replacing a 256GB Crucial M4. It takes a couple of reboots for it to fully cache the boot sequence but once it's there, the PC boots up just as fast.

The SSD portion of the SSHD caches the files/programs you use most, so you only notice it slow down when you're running rarely used applications etc...

Without question, SSDs are faster, but I rather prefer the price/performance/capacity compromise offered by SSHDs.

Have they finally fixed the bugs with those things? I was going to get one a few years back but some googling revealed so much vitriol and public acceptance of faults by the manufacturer on their own website + forums that I gave it a miss.

A few years ago? I wasn't aware consumer SSHDs had been around more than 18 months to 2 years. You live and learn.

They aren't the second coming of Christ, but they are a viable upgrade to a standard HDD and a value alternative SSDs.

I like the Kingston one as well! But Samsung really tempted me. And the other thing is does the SSD drive can be in PC with HDD drive together are they work ok?
