Bought a cheap SSD, OCZ Agility 120GB, and I want to do a clean install on a Lenovo X61 of Windows XP and then upgrade to win 8.
I've stuck the drive in the bay, straight out of the box, and went to boot from a bootable USB that I made but it seems to be missing a step as it's not working out the same as when I have done this before for Vista on a regular HDD. What have I missed?
What's not working? will it not boot to the USB, or is the Windows install not detecting the SSD?
Doesn't seem to register the ssd. I select boot from temporary device, my usb. It shows the ssd as the highest in the boot order, ocz agility. But then when I click usb, I get please select os to start: 1st text mode setup (boot from flash), 2nd: GUI mode setup, continue setup + first start of Windows or DEBUG...
Which should I choose?
Sounds like the text mode hasn't offered you the chance to partition and format the SSD.
Follow the GUI mode setup and you should get the option to sort out the SSD.
If you happen to have access to a PC with a spare connector, you could partition/format the drive before you put it in the tablet, if it makes you feel more at home with the installation.
Windows would partition the drive after you get to that point. Where is this USB from? If you want a true clean install maybe create a USB for your version of windows from a pure iso.
Most of the Windows 7 iso's can be found on digital river. Windows 8 iso's are downloaded from the Microsoft site. You will need the product key from the bottom of the laptop unless you have a Windows 8 with no product key in which case you shouldn't be asked for one (it is auto entered using SLIC in bios).

I wonder if the x61 suffers from the same nobbled bios as the t60. My t60 won't recognise an ssd unless I install a hacked bios... thanks lenovo....
