I know this is a new drive out but my question really is why is the 4TB WD drive offered at such a price premium above Seagate's offerings and why does WD not have a cheaper alternative such as the WD Green??

Dunno, but probably because there's nearly always a price premium on new, or leading edge, technology.
There will be, for instance, those that want 4GB drives that will buy the high end if the low end doesn't exist, but would buy the low end if they could.
So, it makes sense to release the high end only. After a while, when you've absorbed as much sales as you can, release the cheaper version for those that won't pay the premium.
Which gives you a choice .... stump up the cash, or wait. Of course, what we don't know is how long you'd have to wait for? Next week, or 6 months?
It uses superior lubricants for the bearings.
