    New Build: Storage ?? Win8 + Apps on an SSD / 4 x 1TB in RAID 10 for storage - wise?

    HI Folks

I was on this forum years ago (I think I'm still entitled to free shipping on Scan from that registration )

I've just about got all the stuff together for a new build, that will be used for still image processing (LightRoom 5 / DxO Optics Pro 9 + PS CS5), video editing (Sony Movie Studio 12), a little bit of simple audio processing, and general MS Office productivity work.

    I have already purchased:

    4770K
    MSI z87-G43
    4 x 4gb Kingston DDR3ram
480GB Crucial M500 for OS (Win 8) and applications.
Nanoxia Deep Silence tower, with a BeQuiet 630W power Supply, and BeQuiet cooler.

I am yet to purchase HDD storage.

Where I need advice is on storage. I don't reckon this machine needs more than 2TB storage on board, so my thoughts, for speed and security, are 4x WD10EZEX in Raid 1+0

Please tell me if this makes sense, and if not, what I should be thinking about

I would future proof and put in 2 Tb drives HD footage is space hungry, even before the 4K debates start, a Blu Ray quality hour weighs in at 20 Gig or so, The 16 Gig RAM is a good choice, for graphic intensive work, not needed for gaming, but definitely for your rig.

i am looking to upgrade to 32 Gig when 8 Gig DIMMS become more affordable. It also depends how much you will push to external drives.

I would agree with above. Better do Raid 1 on bigger drives and have some extra storage, you will already have your system and software on fast ssd so not sure if you need striping. Keep the cache from Lightroom on SSD to for nice and fast response.

2 x 2TB in RAID1 and 4 x 1TB in RAID 10 gives the same storage capacity (2TB)....the raid 10 will probably give better performance though.

I meant put 2 TB drives instead of 1 Tb so it would be 4 x 2TB n installed in whatever configuration

The RAID 10 will be faster and can lose more drives in case of failure but I have to agree with robredz, future proof now if possible. 2TB drives would be a wise investment.

Thanks, guys, for your comments. I have gone down the road of 4 x 2TB. Only £15 more per drive ( Toshiba DT01ACA200 ), - Next step up would have been 3TB drives, but 4 x 2 in RAID 10 seems to hit the sweet spot between overall storage requirements, and initial outlay.
