    e-sata cable too long?

    Hey,

I just purchased a 3m cable for my e-sata enclosure, however the computer doesn't see the drive anymore. There's a chance the cable is knackered, but is it also a possibility that the cable is too long?

I did a bit of googling and there seems to be mixed reports about using long cables, so I'm wondering if there's some reasoning behind it.

    Cheers

According to Wikipedia the (official) maximum cable length is 2m.

If the seller says that the shielding of their cables is good enough to allow for longer ones, then it might just be a faulty cable.

Not just a question of shielding, the cable construction has some bearing on it too. Also the quality of the connectors and the interface.

But if it isn't working, send it back (assuming that the drive still works with the original cable!)

High speed serial interfaces can be tricky to implement - cross talk, interference and reflections can all degrade a signal. The same is true for HDMI as well - I have known cases (with HDMI) where a cable can too short, causing problems.

That makes a lot more sense now, thanks for the help! I bought it separately from the drives, but I'll definitely send it back.
