Any experience of M2 slot SSD vs regular ones?
I'm going to be starting a new build and the MB will be the Mini-ITX - Asus Z97I-PLUS
It has an M2 slot and I'd love to use it. This will be my first SSD and so therefore have no experience of them and was looking to know any advice on them before I set out.
Have you used an M2 slot type SSD and how have they compared, which things such as ease of use or have there been any other porformance changes?
Re: Any experience of M2 slot SSD vs regular ones?
I believe they suppose to be able to surpass sata3 speed. to like 7xxmb/s?
Re: Any experience of M2 slot SSD vs regular ones?
Got one on my mac book retina - there's no noticeable difference between it and a 120gb evo installed in my father's macbook in terms kf general usage. Plus M.2 cards are really quite pricey at the moment compared to their Sata Equivalents.
Re: Any experience of M2 slot SSD vs regular ones?
I'm looking at a 512GB version and the difference in price will be about £70 but the space saved will mean I can then get one of each in my tiny case PLUE a slot loading dvd drive and maybe a regular HDD ALSO! So there are some bit advantages for with with my Mini-ITX system.
Do you know if I have to do anything odd or beware of anything when installing windows?
Re: Any experience of M2 slot SSD vs regular ones?
Unfortunately no, I've only ever installed Mac OS on it - I belive it's the same, but I can't comment. There's a great guide on Overclock.net I think

No worries thanks I'll Google a how-to closer to the time
Re: Any experience of M2 slot SSD vs regular ones?
They're slightly quicker to boot as I understand them. I've got one as boot drive on a laptop and it is blindingly quick to start up. Subjectively speaking, it seems to shave a second or so off the boot time of a normal SSD. They're pretty good value too compared to SATA3 SSDs.
Re: Any experience of M2 slot SSD vs regular ones?
Unless it's the same SSD, it could be the SSD that's making a difference rather than the throughput speeds, because when booting I don't believe it takes advantage of the 500MB speeds, so the connection type shouldn't affect speed of booting.

2nd MrRockliffe comments, recently when doing research which type of SSD to get for a new build with a motherboard having a M.2 slot I opted for SATA SSD as performance same but cheaper to buy. I do like the compact design of M.2 SSD's but not just willing to pay the £ yet.
