Thumbs down HDD wont format nor re-partition

Hello! my seagate 500gb laptop hdd is not formatting nor i can make any partition. its showing as a mass storage and wanting a format when i plug it in. but when i try to format its failing. i searched all over internet and found no sollution. i used disk management and a third party software (easus partition master) to check the drive and both showing it as 465gb unallocated space and cant create a new partition. i searched allover the internet and found many method to check my hdd. when i use command prompt it says Data Error: cyclic redundancy check, some says read/write error, some says corrupt MBR. i have used some softwares to check hdd and SMART test failed i also tried seatools and it showed my hdd as a yellow icon and provided only 2 tests but both short and long generic tests passed. when i used a software to test its surface then it found a lot of bad sectors and then i remembered i had a lot of bad sectors before it got corrupt and maybe it can not make a new partition on bad sectors then i searched some softwars to repair or remap those bad sectors and found some softwares. but they are not working as i thought and a software HDD regenarator is working but it will take months to complete fixing them as it reads so slowly. so i took it to a technician and they said they can fix it but its speed will reduce and they cant gurranty it get corrupt again. they wanted a lot of money so i didnt repair it. i think if they can somehow fix it i will also be able to fix it myself. the most i suspect is that overwriting the hdd with zeroes can fix this as this will slow my hdd and they also said about the slow think but i dont understand if this is the real problem. plz help me finding whats the real problem and how to solve it

Assuming that you have tried it on another computer, the drive is faulty.

Bin it and buy a new one.

Re: HDD wont format nor re-partition

Was the drive new/user/refurbished? Did you buy it off a private seller or a shop? What is the model/part number and the serial number of the drive please?

I don't know if Easus Partition Master can do this, but in Acronis Disk Director one can tell the software to create a partition at the end of the available disk space, as opposed to the beginning of it. This way the software may not encounter the bad sectors and complete the job of creating a new partition.

Re: HDD wont format nor re-partition

    Try opening a command prompt
    Run "diskpart"

    type "list disk"
identify the disk number of the drive you want to partition..
then type "select disk n" where n is the number you just identified
    then type "clean"

Should completely wipe the partition information from the disk, you should then be able to partition it as usual unless there is a serious issue.

Re: HDD wont format nor re-partition

I guess your only option is a low level format with your fingers crossed....

Failing that, it'll probably make a decent paperweight.

Re: HDD wont format nor re-partition

Ah, it's an external drive.....take it out of the caddy and connect it directly, might be a bad SATA <> USB converter (if your lucky!).

Re: HDD wont format nor re-partition

You will need to run something that marks sectors bad and/or re-allocates them elsewhere.

I would say spinrite but it's more for people who don't want to lose the data on the drive and as such it can take days (or even weeks!) to complete depending on the size of the drive and how many physical defects it has.

Can you do a surface scan on the drive with windows chkdsk?

Re: HDD wont format nor re-partition

I would take it back to store, stating Windows fails to install on the drive.

The thing the shop keeper is saying, that it needs to partitioned as it was at the time of sale, is just him trying to fob you off.

Acording to the serial number the drive is OEM (came as part of a computer/inside a USB enclosure), so there is no warranty via Seagate unfortunately.

You will have to go back to the shop and stand your ground.
