Price mainly, speed secondly and reliability last.

Depending on what are you going to store on the HDD and where in what environment I would choose my HDD.

WD Red or Purple for 24/7 run, optimised speed and consumption. Seagate NAS equivalent the same.

WD Black is different with high speed and extra warranty. I wouldn't bother. You might as well buy some hybrid drives.

I agree with Bonebreaker777 about the WD Black drives, hybrid drives offer better performance now at a better price.

I thought the difference between the black and blue is a small firmware tweak and a different sticker

Really? Because it used to be a 3 core ARM controller on Black/Red vs 2 core on the Blue drives, plus Black had better bearings and an extra 3 years on the warranty.

In terms of what the consumer actually sees, probably just that the Blue drives are quieter by default. Performance is close enough for most consumer use.

Blurb from a WD rep. elsewhere this morning on a similar topic:
The difference between the drives is in the purpose the HDDs are designed for, so the best choice depends on what are you planning to use your drive for.

The Black is a performance oriented drive and has build-in features like dynamic cache (which optimizes the cache allocation) and no touch ramp technology (the recording head never touches the disk) that will give you faster loading times, and has 5 years limited warranty as well. So, for instance, if you're looking for a gaming drive, I would recommend you this one.

WD Blue on the other hand is meant for everyday computing - very good drive with solid performance and typical power consumption. It comes with capacity up to 1TB and 2 years limited warranty.

Lastly, WD Green drives are energy efficient, secondary storage designed HDDs. Their main benefit is that they save power and wear by spinning down when they can, this means they're basically best for things like backup drives which are only in use periodically (e.g - once an hour), but I wouldn't recommend it for boot drive. Sorry for late answer, had exams, so I forgot
Is the WD blue good enough for games?

There's also the caveat that WD won't warranty or support their cheaper drives in most RAID configurations. Basically, if its anything more than RAID1, you need to get Red drives.
