2TB drive limit on older PC?

I'm planning to do a major upgrade in my PC in the near future and to start off I want to get a bigger hard drive, partly for more space for video files and backups etc. Some of the partitions are getting full. I could delete lots of things and re-partition but I'm also aware of the age of my 1tb storage drive (5 years+) making me worry it might fail at some point. I'll put all my media and documents and backups on there and that drive can then be kept for the rebuild. The OS will go on an SSD.

I'm thinking that 3tb or 4tb should be all I need for the next few years. My question is; will the drive work with my old, non-UEFI motherboard? I've read that it won't work as a system drive but what about just as storage? I think it will but I'm not sure.

For a single large disk, this from Seagate is worth a read http://knowledge.seagate.com/article...language=en_US
Looks like you would need to partition it and use a "DiscWizard" device driver.

Re: 2TB drive limit on older PC?

I did some searching myself and found this from MS: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2581408

It says that I can use a >2tb drive as a data drive, using GPT, as long as my motherboard drivers support it. Seeing as Intel stopped providing new drivers for my chipset a few years ago I'm still not sure!

Re: 2TB drive limit on older PC?

Was browsing Asus bios page for your mobo and 2nd to last ROM state:-

    P6T 1303 BIOS
    1. Fix HDD size shown incorrectly if it's bigger than 2.2TB
    2. Fix DEL and F8 keys doesn't work with Microsoft Reclusa Keyboard

So I reckon your good to go on BIOS/Mobo side as would expect your using last bios release (P6T 1408 BIOS).

The here's a thread regarding EVGA X58 SLI mobo with 4TB HDD, as that mobo would be using same Intel drivers as yours I'd say your good to go on that front.
