Samsung 840 EVO mSata Firmware update
Spotted a firmware update via the magician app a few minutes ago, the mSata EVO got missed on the 2nd firmware update to address the slowdown bug and now I am running fw/EXT43B6Q
I never took note of the old firmware but I see reports of versions 41 and 42 so it seems this is a 2nd update after all.
Nothing shows on the website yet.
Heads up if you also have the mSata versions.
Re: Samsung 840 EVO mSata Firmware update
What problem does it fix?
Re: Samsung 840 EVO mSata Firmware update
Assuming the slowdown of reads with old data that was never fully fixed in the initial update but no changlog, you cannot get a single hit googling the fw id. the 2.5" had a 2nd update in april so this has been a long time coming.
was painless as I forgot to disable bitlocker and it didn't trip it.

Man, I totally forgot about this! I was trying to figure out why my laptop felt so sluggish, so I benchmarked the SSD...
[edit] Note that I had ran all the HDTune benchies a with 64kb block size - just re-ran with 8MB, link here for reference.

Did a quick bit of Googling and found out that the second firmware fix for the mSATA version was finally released last month. Note that it isn't available to download directly on the Samsung website, so I had to apply it via Samsung Magician 4.8. All seems well again in the world :p

I then ran the "Advanced Performance Optimisation" function in Samsung Magician and benched again to see if it had any discernable effect. Perhaps more stable performance in HDTune?

Two quick questions for you fine folk:- Do I need to keep Samsung Magician installed AND running constantly in the background for the "performance optimisation"?
- I plan on re-running the benchies in a couple of months to see if performance is the same, but is there anything else I need to do?
Cheers,
Su
[edit] For the benefit of Google, new firmware version is EXT43B6Q.

the slowdown issue was fixed once with the last update, but from there performance would degrade back to rubbish with time. Users would have to manually re-run the fix . This latest update automates the refresh optimisation cycle through the magician software to recur and limits the performance loss through the repeated process. I think you might have to make sure this is set up to do this though - see the optimisation tab in magician.

yes keep magician running - but it doesn't have to be on 100%. You can be choosy, but don't go for too long without it running. I think it's set up to optimise during idle so give it some idle time to do this.
not much else to say. Mine is going ok, but then it's an infrequent back-up drive so not regularly changing anyway.
Re: Samsung 840 EVO mSata Firmware update
I would keep it running just for Rapid Mode :)

Ah, ok so it does do constant housekeeping in the background? In this case, probs just best to have it load at startup and just ticking away in the tray then? It doesn't seem to be too intrusive, so I guess that's cool.

I never really bothered with this - seems like it's like a cache mode in the RAM? Does it increase the risk of data loss?
[edit] This doesn't make it seem worthwhile:
