Need a fast USB 3.0 flash stick please
Morning all.
Am attempting to replace my HTPC with a thin client with OpenELEC on, but the problem i have is that it only has 1GB of storage on board, though plenty of bootable USB ports (USB 2.0 and a 3.0).
For OpenELEC / Kodi to work well / responsively, i want really good I/O read/write speeds.
One cheap USB 2.0 stick i did a test on, got write speeds of under 2 MB/s :(
Another USB 2.0 stick gave me approx 10 MB/s write speeds (from my memory), but still doesn't perform well in practice.
Which stick should i buy for USB 3.0 with really good read & write speeds?
In terms of capacity, 8GB is already more than enough. Don't need 16GB or more.
Thanks

The best as far as I know are San disk extreme pro. But the capacity will be high. The extreme are also very good. Stay away from their ultra stuff the writes are very poor.
They have some tiny one called a fit but I think the speed is erratic and not what they claim.though it has about 20MB/s write which you may find acceptable.
Re: Need a fast USB 3.0 flash stick please
I think most of the fast sticks are high capacity.
I'd say check out reviews of whichever stick you end up buying. There's quite a few USB3 sticks that can barely manage USB2 speeds (Kingston Data Traveller G3 for example), whilst others are very fast (another Kingston example, Data Traveller Ultimate).
On the plus side, even high capacity sticks don't cost the earth these days - unless you buy on the high street, asda etc.

This may be helpful for you http://usb.userbenchmark.com/. I have a SanDisk Ultra 16GB and, as Kumagoro said, the writes are a bit slow.

I've gone for the Corsair Voyager series. Love them. Got mine from Scan.

Thanks guys.
Have side-stepped the issue in the end, but still appreciate the responses.

I dislike that really fast USB sticks are so large. I found the right balance in size/speed with the 7dayshop 64Gb USB 3 sticks. Cheap too.
I think it may have been someone on this forum that pointed me to it.

Some scope here for a Hexus benchmark & group test. Which stick is best for hosting that FreeNAS install, or even just as a W10 install stick.

my voyager stick by corsair is not large at all. wouldn't want it any smaller tbh or it would be a nightmare to find amidst the clutter in my work bag

Link or picture? The key is that it plays nice with MacBook side by side USB ports.

I know it's a little late but I have a 16GB Sandisk Extreme, they are great drives, I can post a benchmark if anyone is interested.

I used to run Windows To Go (8 enterprise) off a 32GB MicroSD card in a USB 2.0 micro card reader. Seemed pretty responsive, and microSD cards are dirt cheap nowadays. Could be an interesting option to throw into the pot if we end up crowdtesting a variety of storage options. I did a search a few weeks ago and USB 3.0 microSD readers are only about £3 - £4 on the 'bay...
