    Cloned HDD won't boot

I've just tried to upgrade my 500Gb HDD to a 1Tb HDD by using EaseUS Free version to clone the old drive to the new one which seemed to work fine. But when I tried to use it to boot the PC, it just kept going into the Asus BIOS screen - and I've no idea why or what I'm supposed to do with that.

Reverting to the old setup and booting up, I went into Device manager>Administrative tools>Computer management>Storage>Disk management and right clicked n the new drive and made it 'active. I noticed that the old drive also has a 'recovery partition of 450Mb so I also cloned that to the new drive.

Now if I try to boot with only the new drive I get Windows 'Error 0xc00000e..... required device inaccessible....'

When I reconnect the old drive (even leaving the new one connected as well) it boots fine.

I'm now at a loss at what to do.... one thing I noticed in 'Disk management' is that the old HDD is identified as 'Boot, Page file, Active, Crash dump, Primary', where as the new HDD only has 'System, Active, Primary'. I don't know what these mean but I would have though they should be the same - or not? Anyone know how to change them?

    SYSTEM:
    Asus B85M-G motherboard
    Core i5 4690 3.50Mhz
    8 Gb memory
    Windows 10 64 bit

Did you clone the disk or selective partitions? You need to clone the whole disk. I'm not familiar with the software your are using, the free version might have limitations.

Personally, I prefer to use a Linux based machine and the dd command. You can use a Linux live CD for the job, but you do need a bit of Linux experience.

Macrium Reflect Free does it fast and pain free.

I would say just redo the whole process but with a different software. Will be a lot faster.

    Re: Cloned HDD won't boot

did you format the new disk to have an MBR so windows recognises it as a boot drive and not just a data drive?

A proper cloning software would've taken care of that, wouldn't it?

    Re: Cloned HDD won't boot

Just re-reading the initial post - it looks like you didn't clone it. Cloning is not the same as copying files. The new disk is not being recognised as a boot disclosed. After you have cloned the disk, you will need to sort out the partitions as the new disk will appear as a 500GB disk with 500GB ( or thereabouts) of unallocated space.

Yup, but as PeterB says - it's not certain that the OP ran any such software.

    Re: Cloned HDD won't boot

I've seen EaseUS do some odd things, including changing the windows drive letter, which obviously caused havoc!

Download CloneZilla and give that a try, clone the entire disk and expand the main data partition from within windows once you have booted from the clone.

+1 with that... Macrium is pretty foolproof...not the quickest but seldom fails.

OP - did you boot from a PE disk to clone disk to disk or did you do it from Windows?

Either way... I would just be careful you dont get the source and destination mixed up....
