Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
Hi Everyone,
I have recently upgraded to the following system:
9900k
NZXT Kraken x62 AIO
Asus Strix z390-i
16gb G.SKill DDR4 3200mhz
EVGA 2080ti XC
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1tb Nvme
I have been having a few crashing issues so I have been spending some time with HWinfo and have discovered that the Samsung 970 Evo Plus is running at 90 degrees+ at idle without the heat sink on and around 85+ with the heat sink. I have reseated it and tested with the heat sink on and off.
Is this even slightly normal?

I dont even want to test what happens when if I benchmark it with those temps at idle.

Could be a faulty module, thats incredibly high, my 970 Evo is currently running at 49 degrees idle, sat underneath a gtx1080
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
Definitely not right, but in the meantime, certainly don't run it with the heatsink off.

Your own temps aren't too different to the above review, though.
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
I did see that review - my temps are hitting their under load temps at idle with only hwinfo open and a couple of chrome tabs.
I just ordered a temp laser to see if it's a sensor issue. If it's not its back to scan for a swift rma I hope!
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
That's bonkers hot. Mine is 41 right now - sits right above a graphics card and reaches 49 when playing games. That's with a heatsink. Without add around 5 degrees onto both of those.
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
I've got exactly the same SSD, & it's currently at 32 degrees idle. Definitely seems like there's a fault somewhere. I don't suppose you have another M.2 drive to compare it to? Are there any bios settings that control M.2 voltage, I wonder? Maybe try resetting the bios to default values & see if that changes things?
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
I don't have another nvme drive to test if it's the mb unfortunately and the only bios settings I have changed is the xmp profile to run the memory at 3200mhz.
I think my only option is to verify the temps with the laser thermometer tonight and start and RMA with scan for the drive. If the replacement has a similar issue it's 100% the mb.... Or the psu perhaps?
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
Update - I have checked the surface temps with an infrared thermometer (very cool bit of kit for £15!) and it seems to confirm the sensor named "Driver Temperature" is the temp of the drive itself.
Now this begs the question - What does "Driver Temperature 2" monitor? I put the heat sink back on and ran Disk Crystal Mark and within 30 seconds it was reading 105 degrees which is incredibly scary.
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
Samsung's response - "The temps don't appear to eb doing anything bad - its fiiiiine"
Great.
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
Can you actually burn your finger on the offending SSD?
I wouldn't trust your HWiFO64 readings.
If you look further down the report at the Corsair CLCP, which must be the PSU, the three voltage supplies are all mixed up. 5V supplying 12V etc. Which can't be true, if you are up and running Windows to run this monitor.
I think that you are just getting wrong sensor readings.
Quite possibly the program just needs an update to included the specification of recently released devices that you have just installed.
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
I guess it could be a faulty temperature sensor, or there is no sensor at all and it is trying to get a reading.
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
Okay, as someone who has just specc'd this same SSD for my boot drive, that's a bit alarming. Can you update us with what you do and the replies (Samsung's?)
Nervous gulp...

If you read through the thread you would see what Samsungs reply was
Re: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB extreme temp issue?
Yeah, sorry, I meant was there further replies or conversation, or anything from the shop (if bought from a shop).
Samsung's reply "nothing to see here" seemed a bit off with what others here were saying, so wondered if this was chased further. Not, I'm sure, that Samsung don't have our best interests at heart...
