    Gigabyte SSD SMART Reset

I sent Gigabyte a failed ssd which I've had for 18 months and they said "no fault found". The last time I checked the smart status, it showed 10TB writes and 800 power cycles. The drive I got back is showing 10GB writes and 8 power cycles. I received the same ssd back with the same serial no so it's not a new drive and, according to Gigabyte, it's not been repaired. Gigabyte say they did not reset the smart status. The ssd is working fine but I don't trust it anymore. Any idea how the smart has reset?

I thought it was designed so it couldn't be reset, to stop unsavoury types scamming folk with old/heavily used drives. Clearly, manufacturers can abuse the system all they want. Noice.

Is that the same serial number on a label, or reading it from the drive?
If a label, is it possible they swapped the PCB?

Both the label and drive serial no are the same. I have a feeling when the ssd failed, something happened to the controller and got reset. I tested it in two machines and the drive was 100% faulty. Then all of a sudden it resurrected itself when it arrived at Gigabyte rma centre.

I once had an early SATA SSD suddenly decide it had all the storage of a small USB stick. Before sending it back I used the drive management software to wipe the drive, and it came back full size. At that point I could do a firmware upgrade. The drive has been fine ever since, but never used to store data I really cared about.

I suspect in my case it was a dodgy SATA cable that confused the SSD controller. But those early SSDs had a reputation for getting in a state, specially the controller used in that drive (the same controller that got OCZ such a bad rep in their drives).

    Re: Gigabyte SSD SMART Reset

After it failed, I connected it as a secondary drive and read its smart data. All the readings were off the scale. It had six million TB written and the temperature was 300,000 degrees C.

Anyway, Gigabyte have decided to look at it again. They're not going to find anything wrong with but I hope they replace it.
