Question Cloning a mechanical 3.5 drive to install on a smaller SSD?

I am not sure if this in the right place

my friends pc is getting on a bit and it has just 1 drive, its a wd blue 1TB and its almost full, it has the os on it, and lots of videos and family pictures etc and a few programs, its a bit on the slow side and the best most obvious option to me is an SSD, the plan is to backup their pictures and videos to my usb passport drive, and this will free up considerable space, around 500gb, my friend doesnt want me to reinstall the os, they want everything like it is now but faster, is it at all possible to copy the os/partition as it is and put it onto an SSD thats smaller, for example a 500gb, and use the wiped 1tb blue as a 2nd drive for the stuff im putting on my usb passport temporarily

    Thanks!

Yes. The new SSD will almost certainly come with software for exactly that purpose.

If you get a Samsung drive then the Samsung Data Migration Tool does what you want directly through windows from the old drive to the new, no reinstall required.
