Using a Synology for mobile image and video sync?

Hi Folks,

I have a Synology NAS with plenty of storage.

I have Onedrive on my phone but it is nearly full (which isn't hard given the size of files these days and it's only 20GB). Rather than subscribe to a service, is there anything that can be done with a Synology NAS which automatically backs up your phone images/videos etc and syncs daily over your wifi?

Ideally, something that also allows you to easily (and be user-friendly) view them whenever you want when your out and about as well?

I have updated to DSM 7.0. I think the final version is due soon. I have had a look at Synology Photos but it doesn't seem to show any of the photos I have in the 'Photos' folder of my NAS? Although even if I get this to work, it still doesn't solve the auto-sync function etc I'd like.

So, Hexites, does something like this exist? Or Am I going to have to fork out for a Onedrive or similar subscription?

Doesn't the Synology DS cloud app do that?

I think Acronis also have something, but I haven't tried it

Thank you. I'll look at Acronis. DS Cloud won't even log in for me.

Having looked at Acronis. It costs £35 (at least) per year. You can get quite a lot of cloud storage for that.

I take it that that's the only option if you want to use your NAS? Seems like a gap in the market to be honest.

I don't know if it still current but the DS file app used to do this. At least in terms of backing up and transferring content from your devices.

Access externally, I connect in via a VPN setup so never needed 'direct' external access.

You might want to take a look at Synology Drive (cloud sync) and Moments (photo and video sharing). Drive was supposed to be Synology's private cloud equivalent to Google Drive Etc and a replacement for DS Cloud Station Server/Cloud Station Drive.

Synology Drive is aimed towards multiple end users managing their own storage, and that may be why it has failed to displaced Cloud Station which is geared towards a sysadmin managing centralised storage. You can't install Cloud Station AND Drive, it is one or the other. Moments does not work with Cloud Station, so Drive + Moments OR Cloud Station Server + Photos.

No idea how good DS Drive is. I gave Drive + Moments a trial but it didn't last long because my use of a NAS is more about a sysadmin managing centralised storage in a cross platform network.

Before you give up on Photos, make sure you have the indexing set up correctly. I've fixed Photos for a few customers and the common problems are either the indexing not configured or file permissions. If the indexing is correct, try uploading some photos through the Photos webUI and see if they show up.

Keep in mind that if you are self hosting the NAS accessing multi-media content from outside the local network can be painful due to the slower upload speed of typical broadband connections.

The best deal on OneDrive is to buy with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft 365 Personal is ~£5 PCM, for all the Office desktop apps, 5 installations and 1TB of OneDrive.

I do think I have done something wrong in regards to synology photos. I'll look again but there aren't any great guides for getting it up that I've found.
