Compatability of M.2 drives with heatsinks and motherboard heatsinks?

I'm in the early stages of planning a new PC build. Looking at M.2 nvme drives, some of the faster ones come with heatsinks.

Looking at motherboards, some come with per-slot M2 heatsinks. Presumably that's not a problem -
you can just leave the supplied motherboard heatsink off if the drive has its own heatsink.

But what about motherboards where there's a large single heatsink that covers one or more M.2 slots
and other parts of the motherboard? Does that mean you can't use M2 drives that have their own
    heatsinks?

Either take the heatsink off the SSD, or leave the motherboard heatsink off - it's probably going to be designed to be removed so you can get the SSD in in the first place and unlikely to be part of cooling for anything important.

Or just get the version of the drive without the heatsink if available - they're usually cheaper anyway.
