    Compatibility of Seagate 7200.11 drives

Hi, I'm thinking about buying N5200 Pro, and I'd like to use 3x 500GB Seagate 7200.11 drives (ST3500320AS). Are there any information about compatibility of these drives with the selected Thecus unit?

    Thanks,
    martin

    Hi....

Just wondering if you ever got any info on this...?

Or did you go ahead and buy anyway, and if so, did it all work OK?

    I am considering buying the N5200 Pro and 5 x1Tb Seagate 7200.11 (ST31000340AS) drives

    Thanx in advance.

    Chris.

IMHO and Personal experience from as a home user perspective when drives fail...

    Stick with Western Digital drives.
    Westen Digital:
They use less amps, run cooler, and have an excellent exchange program.
When I lost a WD drive they expedited a replacement drive out to me FAST!
The box arrived next day with return packing slip. it was a pleasure...

    SeaGate:
I use Seagates exclusively at work (SUN) and when a drive goes bad I contact my vender to deal with the drive replacement within 4 hours.

HOWEVER, that great support doesnt extend to the end user as I found out. one of the drives in my raid5 was giving S.M.A.R.T errors. Seagate expects you to ship your dead/dieing drive out to them first and good luck in finding a box to do it with. Even though they give you an option to pay postage ahead of time I eneded up paying postage twice. I got my drive replaced but it was not an easy thing to do. Now I know there is a way for them to ship the drive out to you first but they dont make that option obvious to the consumer and many end up doing what I did.

IMHO Seagate is great for work, Western Digital is great for the home.

    Save Yourself much grief....

I purchased 2x 750gb 7200.11 (ST3500320AS) a few weeks ago and have not had any issues to date, but its only been a couple of weeks. I work in an IT shop and the consensus here is that Seagates are superior to WD drives... I have no personal opinion, but got a deal on the Seagates and went with them and the 5 year warranty. I am sure both companies have drives that are bad. Just have to hope you get good ones.

    Good luck
    jc

I went with Seagate for the five year warranty too, but I've been pretty lucky with all my drives and I've owned most brands for several years at some point.

Better touch wood in case I just cursed myself.

In five years we'll be carrying 1TB thumb drives on our key chains guys you don't need such a long warranty and SeaGate knows it

Sorry, only just joined the forum recently but if you're interested, I'm running that exact configuration on my Thecus N5200BR Pro and it's been flawless (touch wood) since January. I do a lot of large file transfers to and from it on a regular basis.

I had an external 320GB drive die on me and Seagate replaced it with a 500GB so I'm sure the same would be with these particular drives. I personally have 3 - 7200.11 drives and love them!

I own both and can honestly tell you Seagate drives run hotter. If your concerned about heat, sticking with Western Digital is a wise move.

Although the Seagate RMA procedure seems to be more efficient. Sent my mate's old 250Gig Maxtor in for RMA on the same day as my WD Raptor 150. The Seagate replacement arrived 5-6 working days later. WD took almost a month and that's after 6 emails and 3 phone calls.
