Big problems with 4100 / data

    Hi,

I have a 4100 and cannot get it to boot. I have tried it with and without drives.

Essentially I cannot see it on the LAN - I have tried pinging, resetting, set-up wizard etc., all without joy.

So I go out and buy a 5200BR Pro - however when I put the drives in that - there is no Raid 5 and I still cannot see my data.

Any suggestions as currently I have spent hundreds of pounds and still have no data / storage.

The original 4100 was not that old - maybe a couple of years - but was working fine, but then suddently vanished from the LAN and we couldn't see it.

Any assistance would be appreciated, as I am not getting anywhere fast

    Many thanks.

Re: Big problems with 4100 / data

    Dear Sir,

Due to the system difference, thus we can't see the data if we take N4100 HDD into N5200PRO, thus
please refert to following steps to verify possible issue on N4100:

    Simple Problem Diagnosis Procedure
This procedure is meant to provide a simple and quick way to identify which part
    of the N4100/+ has failed.

    1. Don’t insert a hard disk into the N4100/+. Attach the power cord and then
reset the IP address and admin password to the default settings by doing
    the following:
    a) Power on the N4100/+ and immediately press the Reset button for
10 seconds. (The Reset button is near the LAN connector)
    b) This resets the N4100+ to its default IP address and password
    settings.
    • Default IP: 192.168.1.100
    • Default admin password: admin

    2. Attach the power cord and connect the LAN cable between the N4100/+
    and a PC. Don’t use a hub.

    3. Turn on the N4100/+ and check the front panel. The Power LED should
glow blue after power button is pressed. Then, the Busy LED starts
blinking orange for around 60 seconds. After that, the Busy LED turns off.
If the Busy LED keeps blinking orange for more than 3 minutes, the
firmware may be corrupted during improper firmware upgrade procedures.
It means that the motherboard has malfunctioned and needs to be
    repaired.

    4. Set the IP address of the PC as 192.168.1.111, and then access the
Login page. Make sure the N4100/+ and the PC is directly connected
through a LAN cable, and not through a hub or a router.

    5. Check if the Web Administration Interface shows up and works fine. Then,
check if the system status is normal and the HDD Power LED works fine.
If the results are positive, it means that the N4100+ is functioning
normally. Otherwise, the N4100/+ may be damaged.

    6. Suppose that the N4100/+ has been damaged. If the Power LED glows
blue and both system and power fans work fine after power button
pressed, the motherboard needs to be checked and repaired. Otherwise,
the power supply unit has problems.

Many thanks. I will give this a try.

I thought the reset button was on the front and not near to the LAN connector (on the rear)

    Thanks

Re: Big problems with 4100 / data

I have a similar problem (my 4100's LAN works for avout 35 secs, then disconnects - I need to wait 1 hr before I can start the box AND get a ping reply - for ~35 secs). My impression: Yvonne's info refers to 4100+. There is no reset button in the back of good old plain N4100.

I am at a point where I would like to read the data off my 4x250G Raid5 onto another storage and then send them the box. Can anyone (including Thecus' staff) tell me how to read the Raid 5 from the disks?
Another web page lets me assume it is based on BSD (uses Samba anyway - I first thought it is Linux), so they probably used some open source software raid. But if vital info is stored on flash, it won't be easy.

PS: I tried Thecus' support suggestion to reset the LAN address by pressing the reset button for approx 10 secs. Result: now the LAN is totally unresponsive .

    Dear Sir,

If your system can't access to 192.168.1.100 from the LAN1/WAN port, please contact with your reseller for RMA service.

What are the LAN settings for your network?
You may be using a different range of addresses for you PCs to the default one on the N4100. If so after the reset you'll need to provide the N4100 with an address you can see.

Re: Big problems with 4100 / data

I purchased a 5200, top of the range - then I find out that it will not read the raid from a 4100 series NAS.

Can't say I am too happy.

I am now going to have to buy a 4100+.

    Total waste of money.

    I just hope I can backup a 4100+ to a 5200 pro.

I have spent over $1000 and got no where It is just a money I cannot afford

Re: Big problems with 4100 / data

I've been looking at "www dot runtime dot org" (hexus doesn't allow to post URLs before you've matured a bit), would be interesting if their Raid Reconstructor does the job?
I only need to get about 1G off the disks that is *really* important, then I'll scrap the thing.

Thecus' last support advice contained "worst case you can buy another N4100" ... after one box fails conveniently at the end of warranty? Yeah, right, throw good money after bad. My next RAID is sitting right beside me, Promise 8300 in a Linux box. Haven't decided between openfiler and freenas (BSD) software yet. No more Thecus. Then I can handle broken ethernet controllers myself (yes, I understand networking, thanks!).

If I interpret Yvon's reply correctly, RMA apparently is available (only) from the reseller. I worked in PR China when I bought this, now I'm in Germany - have you ever dealt with Chinese sellers, even *in* their country? Oh, I forgot you're a Taiwan Co. ... No, it's got to be in Europe.

Re: Big problems with 4100 / data

    Having wasted $1200 on a 5200R drive, I am now forced to pay $700 for a 4100+

Why did I 'waste' the money?

I was told in a ticket that my drives would 'fit' into a 5200R - of course the Thecus engineer failed to mention that Raid does not work between the two devices. Something that I would have thought should have been essential to inform the client. If he had told me that I would not have wasted $1200 - I feel like asking Thecus for my money back!!

I used to consider that Thecus was decent.

Sadly I am going to end up with a dead 4100 (just outside its 1 year warranty from Scan Computers)
    a 5200BPro (strangely with a 2 year warranty)
A 4100+ (Once Scan Computers get them in)

All to power 4 hard disk drives.

I feel rather let down by Thecus.

Re: Big problems with 4100 / data

Oh, so you're not in Germany .. sorry then. I could have made you a better offer ...

Isn't there something like a 14 Days money back-guarantee where you live?

We got it here, and if a customer tells us a problem like yours, we'd be glad to do the backupping for like 50 € - much better than buying a new one. We'd also take back this misbought N5200...

    Sorry for your situation.

Re: Big problems with 4100 / data

Heck - for 50 € I would drive to Germany to get my data back and ideally onto the 5200.

Let me know if that is possible at all.

Sadly Scan Computers do not seem interested (when i contacted them), where I purchased the 4100 from, and they have no date for delivery for a 4100+ yet.

Let me know if you feel you can help - thanks.

Re: Big problems with 4100 / data

well, EUR 50,- was an estimate based on the work it'd create. my boss would have to tell you, what it'd cost. By now we also don't have 4100(x) in stock. As those don't sell too well, we mostly buy then, when one is ordered.

And as I cannot make any promises, let's start off with some questions...
    - where are you located?
    - is it possible that you'd get your money back for the N5200?

Please answer me via mail: st0ff_at_npl_dot_de
