Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

G'day All,

I have owned my 2 Thecus N5200 for over more than a year now and been most pleased with the units. However I have noted some issues which I am wondering if others have had. I didn't post in the past because I thought they would be fixed with future firmware updates. The original firmware I had on them was "N5200 Firmware v1.00.03". Currently I am now running "N5200 Firmware v1.00.10". I have upgraded all the way from "N5200 Firmware v1.00.03" to "N5200 Firmware v1.00.10". Unfortunately I am still experiencing the same problems, but I am not sure if this is due to my setup and configuration.

==================
HARDWARE / SOFTWARE
==================

2 x Thecus N5200 (Firmware v1.00.10 - As Stated Above)
5 x ST-3500830AS (Barracuda 7200.10 500, Serial ATA NCQ)
1 x EP-808AG ((Surecom 8-Port 10/100/1000M Gigabit Ethernet Mini Switch) The Thecus's Sit On This Switch Along With PC's)
1 x PC Running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2 (DHCP, DNS, Active Directory (AD), ETC Running)
5 x PC Running Windows XP Professional SP2 (One Which Is My HTPC Running MediaPortal)
1 x FlashFXP 3.2.0 (Not The Only Software I Have Tried For FTP)

============
CONFIGURATION
============

- Thecus's Configured for RAID 5
- Thecus's are joined to my domain on the Windows Server 2003 PC.
- Thecus's have static assigned IP's.
- Thecus's have all Folders as 'Browseable' and 'Public'. No ACL's configured at this time.
- WAN Configuration, Jumbo Frame Support 16000, DHCP Enabled, IP Sharing Disabled
- LAN Configuration, Disabled
- HTTP (Enabled), SHTTP (Enabled), SMB/CIFS Sharing & File Access Cache (Enabled), UPnP (Disabled)
- AFP (Disabled)
- NFS (Disabled)
- FTP (Enabled), FTP Encode (ISO)

=========
ISSUES
=========

1. Since the purchase of my first Thecus, I have had issues were I will transfer Files / Folders and the files will have the attributes set to 'Hidden' and 'Archive'. This does not occur with certain file types. Seems to be random when it decides to do it. Also, I cannot change the attributes of the folders and files?

2. When I transfer large files with FlashFXP it seems to disconnect after transferring a few hundred MB, then it reconnects and starts transferring from where it left off. Repeats until the file has finished. This can happen on files as small as 400MB or as big as 10GB. It also appears to never reach a maximum transfer speed because of this. I am lucky to get 5-10MB.

3. Although I have both Thecus's joined to the domain, whenever I try to connect to them, they prompt for username and password. Remember that I also said all folders / files are 'Public' and 'Browseable'. The only username it seems to accept is the admin account I used to join it to the domain.

Your time and assistance is appreciated to anyone who answers.

I will be most interested to see if anyone else has uncounted these issues.

Cheers

Re: Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

Dear Sir,

1. The attributes issue cause form firmware issue, since V1.00.05 fixed.
2. The file transfer issue, please update the latest verison V2.00.01 to fixed this.
3. If all folder in public but need username to login, seem file system structure get some problem.

Summary above issue, we would recommend update to V2.00.01, than backup file and re-create the RAID system, since V2.00.01 we change the file system structure to increase perofrmance and stability.

G'day Yvon,

Thank you for the timely reply. I will be heading out of town for 2 weeks. So upon my return I will relocate my data, do the firmware update and rebuild the RAID array.

Look forward to posting a follow up then.

Kind Regards

Re: Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

Dear Sir,

If sometime still can't get the AD user list, rejoin the AD or use another Domain Name to verify this issue, and the .bin is N5200 firmware file.

Re: Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

Hi Yvon, we only have one domain here, so i cannot use another domain to verify this issue as suggested. do i have to configure anything on the active directory to allow the thecus to authenticate through? joining the domain seems to be ok, its just getting access to users and groups thats a problem - thanks

Re: Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

Daer Zioalex,

The V2.00.01 for N5200 & N5200PRO both, but we didn't complete the release yet, thus why we didn't post on the web page.

Dear TN5200,

The N5200 AD service was pass the request to AD server, and waiting the server feeback, if we can't get the response form AD server and we could join th AD server without any warning message, please check the DC condition via dcdiag.exe from Windows Support Tools, as like NETLOGON, WINDOWS TIME is enabled?

Thanks Yvon,
can I considere its stable?

You said that there is improvements on filesystem structure...
So before create my definitive filesystems I need to know if it is better to do the upgrade now.

Best Regards

Re: Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

Sorry Yvon,
I don't understand...

I need to know if the firmware is stable or not.

At the moment I can create and destroy volume because I'm in startup.

But I will upgrade the firmware only if you tell me that it's stable.

Thanks
Zioalex

Re: Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

Dear Sir,

Sure! Current brand new N5200 use V 2.00.01 from factory. If you don't need to file system check, the V2.00.01 is fine.

Re: Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

zioalex:
before you apply a firmware for N5200, check if you got N5200pro (as I recall).

You may try to update a N5200 Firmware on a pro, but its considered stable for N5200 only, not for N5200pro - there's 2.00.00 the latest stable. Just have a look at www.thecus.comn/Downloads ...
Hardware mods:
# they void your warranty
# they may seem to work, but kill your machine later on
# they are mostly unneeded, because the engineers who built a machine knew what they were doing...

Re: Thecus n5200 - Files / Folders / Transfer / AD Issues

Am I the only one who is confused with this 2.00.01 firmware release for the N5200?

If I understand correctly, then in order for you to update to the latest version you need to move all your data off the N5200, update the firmware and then rebuild the RAID array as it uses a different filesystem?

I have got 5x 1Tb drives running in my N5200 and I dont particularly fancy having to move 4Tb of data and then wait another 18 hours for the array to initalise just to update the firmware......also, no release notes to actually tell us what is in v2.00.01

Fortunately, I do have another currently empty N5200 that I am setting up and will have to update this to the latest version and copy everything across... but it just seems like a dead end for those users who dont have anywhere to backup their data to (isnt that why we are running RAID5 systems?!).
