    Re: N5200Pro Raid5 Expansion

I went through the logs to see what the N5200 had to say about the new disk:

    2008/01/29 18:18:07 N5200 : Disk 1 on N5200 has been added.
    2008/02/02 12:15:38 N5200 : mdadm: /dev/md1 has been started with 4 drives and 1 spare.

... that seems (to me) to be right... is there some way to turn a "spare" into part of the array?

    Re: N5200Pro Raid5 Expansion

I worked it out - I had to put the new drive in "hot". The first few times I tried it I shut the box down, installed the drive and booted up. From that state it wouldn't let me do anything with the drive.

I ended up booting it and THEN installing the drive and the migration page gave me an option to add the disk.

    At least it works

Hi yeh ditto on the "hot" spare thing. I had to take the spare out and restart without it and then shutdown again and then reboot for the "hot" spare to be "unticked"

bit unintuitive - I'd have thought "hot" spare was sort of an optional convenience - an alternative to having to shut down and install a drive "cold".

There's nothing in the manual that says "hot or nothing"

    Re: N5200Pro Raid5 Expansion

    Bump:
I have the same issue as h0mersimps0n

    My System : N5200BR Raid5 Expansion

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am one of those people who had my additional (identical drive #4) drive space put in a GD SNAPSHOT drive when trying to add to my 3-drive RAID 5 array. I believe I did a migration but then couldn't do an expansion...

Currently I'm in the process of moving 500 gig off my 3 disk RAID 5 array onto the 4th drive spare to completely delete the array and start from scratch because all my attempts to reallocate the space from snapshot has failed..

I would LOVE to know if it's the FIRMWARE version (I'm using 1.00.10) that's doing this SNAPSHOT thing or what? Should we all move to the 5200pro 2.00.00 firmware even though we all have n5200 non-pro thecii?

What is the EXACT procedure that is suppose to work for adding a drive to an existing array?

Anyone notice a firmware pattern of causing the SNAPSHOT issue?

    veryyyy frustating...

    Unhappy Re: N5200Pro Raid5 Expansion

I just tried migration my 3x1Tb RAID 5 to 5x1Tb RAID 5. The process had been running for about 30 hrs (indicated >92% during lunch) and finally (diner time) the Thecus N5200 Pro started beeping at me indicating a failure in the 3rd drive (which had been part of my original RAID5 array) and saying that the array was degraded.

The Thecus could not be reached by web, ssh, or regular Windows Explorer or Mac Finder.

A reboot of the machine gave me a heart-attack; no RAID defined. All drives OK though (?).
I did shutdown the Thecus and here I am trying to find an answer online on how to fix this ...

    Pretty please help
