    N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Hello,

    My N5200B Pro has 4x 500GB Hitachi hd's (HDT725050VLA360) running in RAID 5.

The speed is very slow with copy from Windows Vista to the Thecus N5200B Pro, only ~15-20MB/sec (one file of 4.7GB).

In my PC I have an Intel NIC ( Intel Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter PWLA8391GTBLK)

The Thecus (on the WAN port) and my PC is connected to a gigabit switch (3com Gigabit Switch 5 | 3CGSU05-ME). The switch supports 9K Jumbo Frame. I tried to enable 8000 bytes jumbo frame in the Thecus but there is no difference while enabled or disabled.

The gigabit switch is connected to a Sitecom Router CLICK HERE it's 10/100mbps. The Sitecom Router is connected to a ADSL Modem also 10/100mbps CLICK HERE. Must I buy these two devices also with gigabit connection?

In several reviews I've seen write performance over 30MB/sec.

I have made a screenshot of the INFO module information in case it could provide important information.

Sometimes the speed drops down to 10MB/sec.

    Cheers
    Jordi

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Dear Sir,

Regarding to the N5200 writing with 15~20MB/s only, the result will be difference from software & environment, here we copy a 1GB file from Vista Business PC/Pentium D 850/1G RAM to N5200, FTP & SAMBA get similary result as below:

回應: 227 Entering Passive Mode (172,16,66,85,234,11)
    指令: STOR 1.1GB.TEST
    回應: 150 Accepted data connection
    回應: 226-File successfully transferred
回應: 226 28.857 seconds (measured here), 35.48 Mbytes per second

Also following suggestion for your reference:
    1. Confirm disbaled any unessary program running under background.
    2. Check no others user sharing the N5200 bandwidth.
    3. Try via FTP to copy the file as above result.

Or mail to support@thecus.com we will provide some tested snap shut picture for you.

    Yvon.

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Hi Yvon,

There is really something wrong ;-(, the write speed doesn't exceed 10MB/sec at the moment.

    OS = Windows Vista Ultimate.

Nobody is using any bandwith or in connection with the Thecus.

The Thecus is connnected on the WAN port to the Switch.

Why are there no ADSL Modem for gigabit? Maybe that is the problem my Modem+Router are not gigabit but 10/100mbps.

Edit: I have removed the 10/100mbps Router unfortunately nothing improved.

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

So are you connecting PC -> Router -> N5200?

If so, even if your PC is gigabit and the N5200 is gigabit, both will drop to the speed of the router. If it is a particularly rubish or buggy router, it could easily degrade the connection to 10mbit.

You'll need to get a gigabit switch to connect everything to.

    Hi Funkystar,

It is connected this way Modem -> Router -> Switch -> PC + Thecus

    Modem= CLICK
    Router=CLICK
    Switch=CLICK

Funkstar, if you cannot understand the website links because they are dutch tell me please.

I have bought the Switch and the NIC new for fast peformance
Anyway I have removed the Router and connected the switch directly to the Modem, no better performance.

If I understand this ok, I need a Gigabit Modem+Router? I want to buy it when it helps, but the problem is I haven't seen a gigabit ADSL modem?

This NIC is working with a "tunnel" in my topic start I have attached a screenshot if INFO module. There is tun0 10mbps? maybe that is the prob?

    Kind Regards,
    Jordi

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

That link to the switch just takes me to the vendors home page.

But the way you have it set up is correct. Taking the router out and connecting the modem directly to the switch will probably prevent you from accessing the internet.

Switches are (relatively) clever devices. each device should connect to it at the fastest common speed, so your PC and NAs should connect at 1gbps, where as the router will connect at 10 or 100. This does not effect the performance of the PC to NAS transfers as the switch creates point to point links between network ports.

You won't find gigabit modems, because there is absolutely no need for them. Routers with built in gigabit switches will eventually appear as the cost of gigabit capable electronis drop in price.

As for why the N5200 is only connecting at 10mbit, i have no idea. I'll leave that for Thecus to try and sort out

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

Indeed Funkstar removing the Router doesn't improve anything.

I have a new speed "record"

I hope somebody can help me out of this because I have to pump a lot of GB's DATA.

Let's hope Thecus can sort it out FunkStar

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Hi Jordi,

    1) The switch is your central point. So it is totally unimportant what your Modem or router does and what speed they are running.
    2) Do forget about the tunnel interface on the N5200. It doesn't play any role here.
    3) In your screenshot showing total commander the speed is about 20 MB/s, that's pretty good. It is possible that the speed varies during the copy operation. You should only discuss about total transfer time and speed.
    4) Is it possible to try a FTP transfer. The MS CIFS protocol is unbelievable slow (because of it's protocol overhead) and compare your results with Yvon ones.

Up to now I'm not really convinced that you're really having a too slow connection.

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    There we have Andreas, Hi.

20MB/s is changed to max. 10MB/s. I just don't get it why the speed is halved in one day, what is up tomorrow 5MB/sec?

Ok, you are not convinced, I think it is weird my speed is now ~10MB/sec and not much exceeding that rate.

Unfortunately I don't have a FTP server to test it.

I can rebuild the RAID 5 array again tonight for excluding RAID errors.

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

There is a known problem with Vista's Network Drivers. If any music or video player is started the network performance drops dramatically - you may want to google for it.
Heres a link to an article in zdnet about this issue:
    http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=709
May be thats also the reason for Your problem.

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Hi Peter,

Indeed, my write rate gained by almost 100% when I closed foobar2000.

The write speed is now 17Mb/sec instead of 10MB/sec.

Do you think this is normal? I have seen write speeds of 30-40MB/sec in reviews here and other websites.

I have disabled all the sounds for the moment in Windows Vista.

Edit: I didn't say Thx, so hereby Thank You Peter!

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Dear Sir,

    Please try on following method:
    1. Enable the FTP funciton on N5200
    2. Download the a FTP clint software & install on your PC.
    as like: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/fil...in32-setup.exe
    3. Link N5200 & PC directly via network cable.
    4. Copy data from PC to N5200 and check the average speed.

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Hi Yvon,

    Thanks for your support.

    I have two questions;

    1) Must I connect the WAN port cable (is now into the switch) to the PC? I don't have the roustor. This means the Thecus N5200 isn't connect on the internet anymore.

    2) What IP do I use in the FTP program, 192.168.0.3? I think it's only possible to access with FTP when you are not in your network, in other words when you have another external IP addressee.

    Kind Regards.
    Jordi

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Dear Sir,

    1. It just a test about the performance, doesn't menas we must use in this way always.
    2. If we didn't change any network cable configuration yet, we just need keyin the IP address of N5200 on the FTP client software to test this first.

    1. I asked it like i did because I want to know if I was connecting it like you were telling me.

    2. I have tested it with my FTP program (600MB file) the average write speed was ~6-9MB/sec.

    Re: N5200B Pro Write peformance

    Daer Sir,

If writing to N5200 performance from bad to worse seem must somthing wrong, please check the configuration or any other program runnung in the same time on PC & N5200, propably someone access to PC or N5200 in the same time make system performance down.

Following link is an user test the N5200 (not PRO version) via Vista for your refernce:
