    Question N5200 Active Directory Support

    Hi Guys and Gals,

    I'm trying to get a N5200 working on a Windows 2003 domain.

While we can get the users to "see" the N5200 under ADS, we seem to be unable to get the directories and files to inherit the correct User Security Permissions from ADS.

When we create folders or files on the N5200 from a user workstation, the folders and files have default rather than inherited Permissions. We need to "fix" this so each user has control over their own files, and protection from access by other users.

We can do this on other servers and workstations in the Server 2003 domain, but the same techniques do not seem to work for the Thecus N5200.
A bit frustrating to say the least, as we know that we could have put up a Windows 2003 Server with RAID and it would have worked first time!

Does anyone have any ideas as to whether we have a NAS or Server 2003 problem?
I haven't put too much info up yet, as I'm not sure what will be relevant to solving the problem

    thanks,
    zapache_mlmc

    Windows 2003 domain
    - multiple DELL Servers
    - 350+ Win XP Pro Workstations
    - Gigabit Ethernet using DLink & Cisco unmanaged switches
    - N5200 NAS, firmware 1.00.09, dual Seagate 7200.10 500GB HDDs, Raid 1 mirror

    Re: N5200 Active Directory Support

    Dear Sir,

    1.
Please check the ACL page, and confirm the "Recursive" box is checked.

    2.
Update to latest version firmware V2.00.01 & check the recursive box.

    Re: N5200 Active Directory Support

    Hi Yvon,
    thanks for the reply.

Can you explain "Please check the ACL page, and confirm the "Recursive" box is checked."?
What does the "Recursive" box do? What does it apply to? I can not find any reference to it anywhere.

Also, can you confirm that the ADS Support is limited to User Authentication, and will not allow the inheriting of sharing and security permissions from the Domain Controllers?

I'm currently rebuilding the array and will load the 2.00.01 firmware tomorrow as per your instructions.

    regards

    Re: N5200 Active Directory Support

    Dear Sir,

    1. If set the first level folder Public->NO form N5200 web configuration page: Storage->Folder->EDIT, which means we have to assign authorization rule on this folder, thus system would apper am ACL item to click from form N5200 web configuration page: Storage->Folder->ACL, in this ACL page we will see a Recursive check box at right upper corner. The Recursive means the following subfoler would follow with the main folder rule.
    As like: \\N5200 IP\yvon\yvon-photo\paris
If we check the Recursive box from first level folder & assign user YVON with writing permission only, which means only user'YVON able to wiritng all of the subfolders below folder'yvon.

    2. The N5200'folder authorization control from ACL setting, N5200 ACL would pass user's account/password to asking AD for a result, by the result to decide the authorization.
If a folder have user A/B/C/D or more users have the permission wiritg to file/folder, if user A create a file/folder named AFOLDER, which means user A is this file/folder owner, user B/C/D could change the file/folder contain, but only user A could chanage the the file/folder attribute.
Thus if user B would change AFOLDER into hidden, move AFOLDER out first and than move back, and the file/folder become to user B, and user B just able change the attribute to hidden.

    Yvon.

    Re: N5200 Active Directory Support

ive been waiting for an answer on why the N5200 is not able to populate Server 2003 domain users/groups. Yes ive uploaded the latest firmware.
yes the time on both the N5200 and my AD server are in synch.
yes the admin user/pass are for the ADS and NOT the N5200. and
yes, the DNS of the N5200 is set to point to my AD server.

i *cannot* seem to resolve this.

    Dear TN5200,

Each AD issue probably come from differnce cause, we are tyring to collect your post from differnce thread and get this through, but an issue spreade in differnce threads would make us misunderstand easily, thus following ways to make this more clear for your refernce:
    1. Start a new thread about your AD issue and what the environemnt & issue happen.
    2. Mail to Thecus for offical thechnical support, and each reqest would generated a ticket number for customer & thechnial department tracking .
    http://www.thecus.com/support_tech.php

and we will glad to help you out with your AD issue.

    Re: N5200 Active Directory Support

    Hi TN5200,

One setting that prevented us from populating the N5200 users under ADS was the WINS Server setting on the Authentication page.

The N5200 is really doing Windows NT resolution not Server 2003 ADS resolution, hence without the WINS Server setting it cannot resolve names correctly.

    Hi Yvon,

Thanks for the information regarding setting folder permission, I will try these today along with the firmware upgrade.

??? As for lodging support requests on the Thecus Support site, maybe you can tell me why the Support Ticket "HJV-41651-233", logged on July 17 is still sitting there unanswered?

    Regards

    Hi zapache_mlmc

Unfortunately, we dont user a WINS server. One other thing that maybe a hurdle is the fact that we are on a sub-domain of the main network - and even though i try to add the AD server's ip entry in the DNS field for thecus, it will not allow this. it only seems to accept this if the actual DNS server is entered..... :-(

    Re: N5200 Active Directory Support

I have the same problem as TN5200, I can join my 5200 to the domain in question through the WAN interface, and populating the wins in the Accounts section. But I am unable to see ANY users or groups from the domain, even after a forced "Sync AD Account"
