Please implement hardware monitoring - N4100+

    Hi,

Please could you implement Fan RPM monitoring, Temperature Monitoring and SMART monitoring on the N4100+

I read on another thread that this is a hardware restriction in that RPM monitoring is unavailable, I thought this hardware was similar or even upgraded from the N2100, which can monitor temperature and monitor fan speed and even set the fan speed.

I'm not asking for you to rewrite the web interface but just to build a firmware that lets us access the devices, and I'll sort a module to do the rest.

I can confirm smart reading can be done as I have successfully read the hard disk temperatures using smartctl, it would be nice if you could build smartctl into the firmware.

I find it rediculous that this device cannot tell if the fans have failed and it's about to burst into flames, at least building smartctl into the firmware would allow us to build a module to shutdown in case of fan failure.

    Dear Sir,

The HDD temperature come from HDD itself SMART value, these value inclued with HDD temperature and etc, but it is come from SATA connection for N4100 known.
But due to hardware structure difference, the N4100/N4100+ deson't support hardware moniting via software, thus we can't do the same thing as like HDD.

Re: Please implement hardware monitoring - N4100+

That's ok, I understand that there may be hardware restrictions for FAN and System Temperature monitoring, but what I'm asking for is to have the N4100+ shutdown when the Hard Disks get too hot.

For example, check SMART value every minute and shutdown if hard disk says temperature more than 65 degrees.

This can be done and could save hard disk failure and data loss if more than one disk gets too hot.

I have installed debian in a chroot to test this is possible and it is.

I would like to see a page where we can set "shutdown / alarm if hard disks get hotter than xx" page (Just don't let the user select too low a value (Like 10 degrees) as the NAS would shutdown always)

If you cannot provide this, please could you compile the utility called "smartctl" to work with the firmware? (It's part of smartmontools)

I can make a module if smartctl is available.

If the fans fail, the disks would get hot and the SMART temperature would go up and we can safely shutdown the box before it's damaged.

    Dear Sir,

If you need the smartctl, please mail to support@thecus.com.

Re: Please implement hardware monitoring - N4100+

    Hi,

I think I've managed to write a little utility that can read the temperatures from SMART hard disks, and I'll write a module that checks this regulary and starts an alarm if the temperatures get too high.
If it doesn't work as well as I expect I'll ask for smartctl to be built.

    Thanks,

    Anthony
