Data capacity the same after migrating raid

Hi,

I recently migrated my RAID5 array from a three disk to four disk array (500gb drives). The migration was done by upgrading to firmware v2.00.01, putting in the new disk, then through the WebUI, choosing Storage > RAID > RAID Config > Migrate RAID > Check 4 checkboxes > Apply, as described elsewhere on this board.

After migrating, the "Total Capacity" shown under Storage > RAID increased but the "Data Capacity" did not. The re-mapped network drive in windows still has the old amount of space and is now full, despite having added the new drive. These screenshots show the different screens in the WebUI for clarification:

How do I get my new space included in the RAID5 array?
Thanks

I think the Expand button is for use after replacing the existing drives with one-by-one with higher capacity drives, not adding new drives the same size. In any case, the Expand button on the RAID Configuration screen takes me to a new screen saying:

Expand RAID Space
RAID space not enough to expand!!
<Back button>

Re: Data capacity the same after migrating raid

I have the same problem. Migration does not seem to work correctly basically rendering it useless!

Here is a list of the steps I performed.

1. I started out with 2 drives in Raid0.
2. I added 3 more drives and created a new raid 5 array
3. I copied the files over from the Raid0 to the Raid5 disks
4. Deleted the Raid0
5. Migrated the Raid5 array to include the additional disks

The capacity of the new array is the same as the three drives it started out with.

Here are the log entries I got

2007/12/01 10:21:41 N5200 : Swap Disk Damage
2007/12/01 10:21:42 N5200 : Swap Disk Damage
2007/12/01 22:22:24 N5200 : User admin logged in from 192.168.0.3
2007/12/02 10:41:05 N5200 : The system N5200 is recovering the RAID and rebuilding is in progress.
2007/12/02 11:04:11 N5200 RAID resize successfully.
2007/12/02 14:28:55 N5200 : User admin logged in from 192.168.0.3

The log entry about Swap Disk Damage makes me wonder whether something got corrupted. Please also observe the timestamps. Migration took 24hours for 5 terabyte drives.

At this point I am at a complete loss as what to do next. I assume the safest would be to somehow backup the data off the array. Reset the Thecus to factory defaults and start over with 5 drives.

Thecus, Is there anything better I could do?

Cheers

Thomas

P.S.: This whole procedure makes me wonder whether this box actually works at all as a Raid array. Has anyone actually tried to replace a drive and it restored successfully?

Yes, I had a failed disk and replaced it with a new one - the RAID5 was recovered without problems

I am very relieved to hear that. Any ideas how to straighten out the migration problem.

Cheers

May be You check this thread Thecus User Group - N5200: new module UTILS.
This gives You some utilities within a module to tune the filesystem.

I suck at this stuff, so I'm in a bit over my head with the modules. I'm terrified of corrupting my data, it's much more valuable than the hardware

Re: Data capacity the same after migrating raid

I can try that but I doubt that 2 TB are reserved. The system still reports 100% usage of the RAID array.

Something else must go wrong when you execute the migration this way. I am in the same boat as jbl. I much rather will get the data off the Tecus and start all over with the full 5 drives before I risk loosing anything.

Cheers

Re: Data capacity the same after migrating raid

I would in any way do a backup of the data before doing any manipulation of the filesystem or performing a raid migration.

Re: Data capacity the same after migrating raid

Thanks for the follow-up. Unfortunately I bit the bullet, saved the data and started to rebuilt from scratch. However, the steps to repro this problem seem simple enough.

I started with a 2 drive Raid 0
I added a 3 drive Raid 5 at 100% capacity
I migrated the 2 inital drives into the Raid 5 array but the total space of that array stayed at exactly the amount it had with only 3 drives.

Cheers

I emailed my conf.bin to Thecus and I'll post here if it is resolved (I have nowhere to backup the data).

Re: Data capacity the same after migrating raid

Thanks jbl.

I just finished restoring my data from various drives and computers I had used for the backup. Took me 2 days to download, a day to rebuild, and 2 days to upload.

A solution is too late for me but this exercise was not a lot of fun and it would be great of you could avoid this.

Good luck

Thomas
