    Nsync issue with FW 2.00.04

This is for information for other users, which might have the same problem - a ticket was already raised to thecus support (Ticket-ID: JNX-82292-361):

There seems to be a change in the nsync handling in the new firmware. I use nsync from the N5200 to backup data to a legacy ftp server.
    Symptom :
    1) server timeouts even during test connection
    2) some tasks never finishing

Heres a log from my ftp server which was captured during a test connection (result: connection timed out):
    FTP session opened.
    USER xxxxxx: Login successful.
Preparing to chroot to directory '/data/n5200'
mod_cap/1.0: cap_set_proc failed: Operation not permitted
mod_cap/1.0: attempt to configure capabilities failed, reverting to normal operation
    FTP session closed.

With FW 2.00.01 all worked fine

Re: Nsync issue with FW 2.00.04

    Hello Peter!

Now I use the firmware 2.00.01 on my N5200.
I like to uprade soon to 2.00.04 because the power spindown with HD501LJ works fine.

Now you write the nsync task has a bug
I see you like to connect a external FTP server for copy files.

I use the nsync task for mirroring file on my N5200 weekly.
I have some tasks they copy files from user folders on the N5200 to the nsync folder on the N5200.

Do you know if the nsync work with copy files from the N5200 to an other folder on the N5200?

    Best regards, Thorsten

    Hi Thorsten
Sorry, I dont' use the N5200 as nsync server, just as a client - so no idea if this is working.

    Update:
After some settings in the ftp server the error messages concerning capabilies are gone. However, nothing is copied from the nsync tasks to the ftp server.
    Update:
files are copied if they are in the root of the selected folder. Folders bellow the root folders are not copied

Unhappy Re: Nsync issue with FW 2.00.04

    Hello Peter!

Now I have update to Firmware 2.00.04 too.

At my N5200 the nsync tasks doesn't work too.

The connection test works successful with my N5200.
But the tasks has start and they never finished.

    It's same that you write:
"files are copied if they are in the root of the selected folder. Folders bellow the root folders are not copied"

    Best regards, Thorsten

Since Thecus is not response to me, I would like to dig some answer over here:

Here’s a simple test on N5200 (firmware version 2.00.02.2) FTP NSYNC using the attached FTP Server.

    Test A:
    1. Create an username & password in your FTP server, and assign a folder which you want to be allocated.
    2. Configure one NSYNC task on N5200, in the source folder (named sourceFolder), create one notepad file & the content of the notepad is “initial state”.
    3. Save & start the task.

Result: sourceFolder is been sync over to FTP server & the content of the notepad file in the folder is “initial state”.  no problem with this, we get the result we want.

    Test B:
    1. Let’s edit something in the content of the notepad from sourceFolder in Thecus. Added one statement “ edit once”. So the original file in sourcefolder has a content “ initial state edit once” & the file name is still remain.
    2. Nsync the task again.
    3. After that, open the Sync file in FTP server and check the content.

Result: The content in FTP server is remained no change, the content is still “initial state”.  we are expecting the content should look like this after sync : “ initial state edit once”, am I right? Correct me if I’m wrong.

    Please advice. Thank you.

I only can get Firmware 2.00.01 here:

    thecus.com/downloadx.php?pid=32&type=f

    Thank you.

Re: Nsync issue with FW 2.00.04

    Hi kanasai,
You are right, the modified file should have been overwritten on the ftp server - this was working on FW 2.00.01.
You will find the new FW here : Index of /Downloads
The link You mentioned in Your post was not updated till now, cause the release notes are not finished (information from Yvon in one of the threads here).
FW 2.00.02.02 is a beta version, so You should not expect working everything correct (You will find it in the beta folder of the link above).

Re: Nsync issue with FW 2.00.04

I still cannot sysnc the file using FTP, Im using Quick and easy FTP Server.

    softpedia.com/get/Internet/Servers/FTP-Servers/Quick-n-Easy-FTP-Server.shtml

I wonder is Thecus problem or my stupidnes. Can anyone verify the test that I did as below?

Here’s a simple test on N5200PRO (firmware version 2.00.04 & 2.00.05.1) FTP NSYNC using the attached FTP Server.

    Test A:

    Test B:

    2. Nsync the task again.
    3. After that, open the Sync file in FTP server and check the content.

Result: The content in FTP server is remained no change, the content is still “initial state”.  we are expecting the content should look like this after sync : “ initial state edit once”, am I right? Correct me if I’m wrong.

ps: The numbers of files is updated, just the content inside the file was not.

Thousand & thousands Thank you !

Re: Nsync issue with FW 2.00.04

OK - have tested it now for myself.
It appeared, that in my case the time setting of the ftp server was not correct - the ftp server was 5 minutes ahead. Changing the test file within this 5 minutes and then syncing it was not successfull.
After adjusting the time settings in the ftp server, so that the changed file had an older date/time as the already synced file - it worked.

    What I would suggest :
    1) check if the time settings in Your network are correct - the machines should all have the same time
    2) wait a few minutes for changing the test file (it seems that the file date is checked for syncing)

Hi Peter, Thank you for the test. May I know which FTP Server you are using?

Re: Nsync issue with FW 2.00.04

I have a problem that is quite similar to the one you described.

I just bought a N5200Pro and had a special disk setup in mind: Three disks configured as a RAID 5 and one disk on which all the data is copied once a week and which is plugged in only during the time of backup so that it can be stored in a secure place at all other times.
First thing I did was updating the firmware to 2.00.04, then I configured the device and set up nsync so that it points to the devices own IP-address. The connection test works, the backup progress starts, but it never finishes. It seems to hang once it reaches the third or fourth folder level for the first time . I hope this gets fixed in the very near future, because data safety is very important for me.

Another thing I noticed is that there seems to be no option to enable the snapshot feature anywhere in the WebDisk interface . Has this been disabled in one of the last fimware versions? If so, does anybody know if it will be back one day?
