N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Hi,
I am trying to stream video and audio files (MP4, MP3, etc) from my N299 Media Server to my PS3.
They appear as "unsupported data" under the PS3 and also "Unable to play this file" under Cyberlink SoftDMA.
I have read that the uShare instance that the N299 uses for Media serving may have some issues with the PS3. Is this fixable with a firmware update on the N299? I am currently running the latest release 1.00.24. and 2.10 on the PS3.
Any help appreciated.
Steve

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Hi - I too have the same problem and am currently scouring whatever forums I can find. If you find anything, please can you post here again?
I will post here again if I find something.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Will do. Some of the places I've read say that a complete rebuild of the N299 might help by resetting the permissions. I'm not sure this would work. Lots of confusing information out there.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Dear Sir,
We found PS3 certain verison firmware would make the MP3 file as "unsupported data", thus we will tring to revsion firmware to this issue.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Hi Yvon
Would this problem also effect MP4 video files from the device?

Yvon,
Is this the Thecus firmware that's the problem or the latest PS3 firmware update?
I am also having problems streaming video, photos however, do work.

Hello Yvon,
I can confirm that my PS3 (FW 2.1) can play streamed MPEG2 formatted video files and Photos from the Thecus 299.
MP3 Audio files and MP4 or DivX video files are shown as Unsupported Data when accessed from the N299 Media Server.
Thanks for your continued investigations.

The same problem occurs with my N5200pro. Problem is with the Mediabolic server on the Thecus boxes. Streaming from other DLNA servers (e.g. Nero MediaHome) do not have this problem. Yvon, would appreciate if Thecus can fix this problem with the N5200pro as well so we won't have to rely on other addons such as Twonkly Server to stream mp4 video from Thecus boxes to the PS3 :)

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Yvon
Yes, Network>Media Server> Enabled is checked. And Photos are supported.
Any anticipated date when the next firmware will be released?

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Hi does this problem still exist - i have the same issue on the N299. I also cannot detect or play AVI files on the PS3 . MP3 simply come up as unsupported data.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Yes it does. I checked the Thecus website about a week ago to see if there was a firmware update, but alas, no newer than the one I have. JPEG's work, but not video or mp3's. Shame, it works so well with my pc's, but without PS3 functionality, it seems a bit useless! gutted!

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
When next firmware will be available? Spindown and PS3 connectivity MUST BE!!!!
-
Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
I'm experiencing the same problems with my N3200. Playing MP3 works okay, but most other media shows up as Unsupported data even tough the PS3 should handle it.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Hi,
there is a Beta Firmware http://www.thecus.com/Downloads/beta/N299_N199_FW_1.00.29beta1.bin but I have not dared to test.
Of course :angst: there is no change log... use only at your own risk if you're tough enough...
BTW: I am not able to add an URL via the add link button, it takes the URL but it does not appear in the posting...
Bye

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3

My friend say: "thecus - is a hot graveyard for ya HDDs". Very hot unit when my samsung work every 24|7. So sad.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
I have no PS3 at this time and I can't test PS3 issues.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3

BT upload nothing

Strange. I have two 750 GB Samsung Spinpoint F1 working and was afraid about heating up after reading some postings about it. Especially as I have reduced the fan speed from high to normal due to the noise. But I have not noticed temperatures to worry about yet.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
I agree by the Yvone above psoted the new firmaware .26 in one thread somewhere - it doesnt seemed to have worked though on the PS3
Do you think it is a problem with The PS3 eg should we report it to Sony?

What's this? This is not beta. But not the firmware on site.
It is the newest non-beta firmware and is distributed on CD now with the n299 sold. I don't know why it has not been linked on the site.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
I stream video/music to PS3 using the N2100 and Twonkymedia. Have you guys tried to use Twonky?
-
Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Is there a Twonky Module for the N299? If so, where do I find it and how do I install it?
-
Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
I think no way to use twonky, isn`t it?
-
Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Who can tell us if there is a Twonky media for the N299

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your mail.
Current N299 media server having some license issue from PS3, thus we afraid N299 would incompatible with PS3 in short time, but we will keeping update to support PS3 as possible, and N299 should compatible with most of DLNA media player, we could try on CyberLink_SoftDMA on PC to verify function, following link for your reference:
Best regards!

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
I wonder if Twonky can get arround the DLNA or is that some how embedded on the N299 Hardware.
If so, Email thcus back and see if the developers over at O N B E A T can port twonky over for you guys like they do the other N##### devices...
If not you can always get a decent deal for your N299's by selling them on eBay and upgrade to the N2100 which streams for sure to X360, PS3, Dlink, Linksys, and many other media players.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
I think N299 is a dead model. Who can breath the life to it?
-
Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
Well, you have to laugh - just the reading the last few posts and I have to agree, I have listed my N299 on eBay. It's no good to me without PS3 functionality. Don't think I'll be looking at the N#### whatever though, steering clear of Thecus altogether I think...

Please resolve this issue with licensing. I like to be able to stream avi and MP3 files to my PS3. At the moment I am on N299 firmware 1.00.24. Is there a work around to get round this problem?
I have also found this information from the " ushare . geexbox . org " Web site for information for the GeeXboX uShare UPnP A/V Media Server GeeXboX uShare UPnP A/V Media Server ,
Latest release of uShare is 1.1a.
ChangeLog:
* Support for XboX 360 dashboard Fall Update (.avi and .divx now are supported)
* DLNA support is not enabled by default, as not mandatory.
* Some configure script fixes and better support for cross-compilation.
* Fixed network interface discovery on MacOSX.
* Much more complete DLNA support through external libdlna.
* Telnet Control interface.
* Support for FLAC and HDMOV files.
* FreeBSD 64bit and MacOSX build fix.
* Newly written configure script.
Compile uShare by running configure and then make. This should produce an executable ushare in the src subdirectory, which can be used right away. No extra files need to be installed.
Example :
CFLAGS="-Os" ./configure --prefix=/usr
make
If you want to enable DLNA support, run:
./configure --enable-dlna
This seems to suggest that the problem of ushare and the Sony PS3 is not a licensing problem but the DLNA should be enable during the program compile. Therefore could Yvon from Thecus consider if this could be put into the firmware for the N299 please. If this were to be true and successful, many PS3 owners will be most happy as there will be no more DLNA protocol error for the avi and mp3 which are shown as unsupported formats.

Re: N299 uShare Media Server & PS3
It looks as if Thecus are ignoring all requests for N299 requirements (spindown, PS3 support). As far as I am concerned it was £100 wasted, I have since moved to a NSA220 which supports all these functions.
