Backup or file copy to eSATA HDD?
Hello together!
I use the Thecus N5200 with Firmware 2.00.04 and 4 HDD’s in Raid 5.
Supported from a Smart-UPS SC420.
Maybe next time I must install my Thecus N5200 complete new.
For this I like to copy (backup) the files to a external eSATA HDD.
- Is hot plug possible for a eSATA HDD?
- Is an other file system as FAT32 possible (for files > 4GB)?
- If the ext3 is possible can reach the eSATA HDD with a Windows FTP program?
Best regards, Thorsten :)
Re: Backup or file copy to eSATA HDD?
Just forgett the e-sata on the N5200. it is there only as a "Sales showoff"
I bought my N5200BPro just because i saw it had e-sata and i needed a fast way to make backups. But it does not work as it should and it is not supported by the firmware. See it just like a "dumb crippled" external LAN/e-sata-port to connect things to the network and has to be operated from an external computer to make any use of it. It maybe works with another N5200BPro but i would not bet on it. We thought it out (gave it to a poor friend) and bought real equipment instead.
Re: Backup or file copy to eSATA HDD?
Just a reminder to see if the Thecus people can give us an answer on this eSATA HDD problem.

Re: Backup or file copy to eSATA HDD?
Dear Sir,
The N5200 V2.00.04 fixed the eSATA issue already, thus please try on V2.00.04.

1. N5200 support eSATA hot plug.
2. On theory support FAT/FAT32/EXT3 for read & write, but NFTS is read only.
3. The eSATA mount ponit same with USB HDD, thus we could access via FTP too.
Yvon.
Re: Backup or file copy to eSATA HDD?
How do you access the eSATA drive attached to the Thecus N5200 box?
When I attached the eSATA drive, I can see the list of disks 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 as the eSATA drive. How do I make a partition of this drive?
Re: Backup or file copy to eSATA HDD?
You should see it from windows as \\nameofN5200\usbhdd\ or \\IPaddress\usbhdd
Re: Backup or file copy to eSATA HDD?
From Windows, here's what I see:
\\N5200\raid6folder - If I map this folder, I get the 2.8TB drive as expected
\\N5200\usbhdd - If I map this folder, I also get a 2.8TB drive, same capacity as the raid6folder
*BUT* inside the usbhdd mapping, I saw the esata folder.
This is odd - I don't understand this! ... but can be usable from Windows
From the unix machine, I have no idea on how to access this esata drive.
THECUS - PLEASE HELP!!!
Re: Backup or file copy to eSATA HDD?
If you have installed the ssh module and are not afraid of the commandline, it works like on any linux host:
(her the esata disc is sdf=^disc6)
// create partitions
#fdisk /dev/sdf
// create fs on first partition(if thats what you wanted to)
#mke2fs /dev/sdf1
//create dir as mount target
#mkdir /tmp/esata
// now mount it!)
#mount /dev/sdf1 /tmp/esata
// copy data with a tar command
#(cd /path_to_data;tar cpf -)|(cd /tmp/esata;tar xvf - )
worx pretty well! rsync would be nice to have, to do differential syncs.
