    8.3 filenames on N5200

If I look on the short filename representation of my N5200 shares, I get random names without any connection to the long filename.
    (dir /x from a Windows-system)

    Example:
    Long Name N5200 = IP16PLC01.GHO
    Short Name N5200 = IWLYZP~3.GHO

Until now I thougt, that is normal with Samba, but today I searched again on this problem and got some information that Samba normaly would keep the first 5 letters of the name. After that there should be a "~" and the next two letters would be some calculated value.

    Example:
    Long Name Samba = IP16PLC01.GHO
    Short Name Samba = IP16P~F7.GHO

    I thought the N5200 is Samba-based, isn't it?
Does anybody know what would have to be changed to get usefull names?

    Thanks,
    Oliver

    Dear Sir,

The dir /x would display what the long name file showing under short file name mode, we could via dir /? for more information.

    Yvon.

    Re: 8.3 filenames on N5200

    Dear Yvon,

that's the point. If you look with dir /x on files with long filename, you will get different short names for the same file, depending if they are stored on a windows harddisc or on the N5200.

    Example:

    Windows-Disk:
    long: testwithlongname.GHO
    short: testwi~1.GHO

    N5200:
    long: testwithlongname.GHO
short: TSIFPQ~I.GHO (=actual name on my N5200 system)

I'd need a short name, which at least gives me a hint, which long filname is ment.

Searching about this problem I found a Samba value "SHORT PRESERVE CASE" , which maybe could solve this problem.

(But I don't know where to change - until now I only work with the web-surface.)

    Best Regards,
    Oliver
