5200 Pro - problems sending mail notifications

    Hi all.

Brand new 5200 Pro here, all configured up and latest firmware (2.00.04) applied, but failing to send mails.

    I have entered known-good parameters.

I know they are good because I have telnetted to port 25 using the exact same parameters and successfully sent mail, which has then been received.

Has anyone encountered this or know a fix?

Why on earth does the box not log anything to do with mail to aid sorting issues like this?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: 5200 Pro - problems sending mail notifications

Mail notification on N5200 is known to not work reliably (if at all). There are tickets open with Thecus to fix this (e.g. VIG-345748 for TLS and HELO domain).

If you have access to the mail servers log files you should check if the NAS tried to deliver a message and if, why the message has not been delivered by the mail server finally. There are many reasons why mail delivery may fail:

    - discarded as SPAM
    - IP address not resolvable
    - invalid HELO/EHLO domain
    - ...

Since the NAS WebUI does not allow to set a domain name to be used in HELO/EHLO msmtp will use localhost what will most probably be the cause in your case.

    /Falk

Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

I find it hard to believe something as simple as SMTP mail does not work.

Unfortunately I don't have access to the mail logs but I might have a go at setting up my own SMTP server so I can see what's going on.

Just did a quick test and found this box sent message to users under the <hostname>.com domain. Looked like it didn't use the domain name we set in the WAN configuration secion.

Re: 5200 Pro - problems sending mail notifications

Here is my setup. Works really well. Took me a bit of playing around to get it.

The trick for me was making sure I had the DNS details entered.

The domain name in the WAN section thecus.leebaldock.com can be anything as I'm not using it. I think there is a default entry in their by default. Anyway field doesn't matter (unless you will be using it).

The account details are blank. Obviously that may be different for you depending on your outgoing SMTP server.

Hope this helps. Ironically the email notification is the ONE thing I have found to work really well on my N5200!

I think it works because you use unauthenticated smtp server. We had problems when the server requires authentication.
