Question Thecus N2100 Yes Box & Evesham M-Box differences

I purchased an Evesham M-Box today from the new Evesham company that has risen from the ashes of Evesham Technology, which closed last week. (They are still trading on e-bay if you are interested).

The advert describes it as a Thecus and it certainly looks like an N2100 in every way. However it has shipped with no set up disc or drivers. Can I use the Thecus drivers? Should I upgrade the firmware?

What actually is the difference, if anything, between the off the shelf Thecus product and the Thecus branded version?

    Thanks

    Roger

It is basically a Thecus box

I think it might have a Wifi module on it - I'm not 100% sure - but is the same under the hood hardware

N2100 mbox to thecus - Thecus Wiki

you need to ssh into it to update the firmware with the latest thecus one,
the mbox firmware is really old so its worth doing...

i just got one from the evesham ebay store too, nice bit of kit
but im having issues getting the print server working atm.

Re: Thecus N2100 Yes Box & Evesham M-Box differences

The sounds good but I have no Linux expereince. Is the upgrade easy to do?

The M-Box has not come with any drivers for me to set it up in the first place. Can anyone send me some?

If I upgrade, will I lose the Media Centre features? Where can I get the Mediabolic Server software - or is that standard now?

    Thanks

    Roger

It has Mediabolic built in - on the firmware...

    You don't need drivers... ?

Re: Thecus N2100 Yes Box & Evesham M-Box differences

The media server isn't supplied in the firmware.
It is on the CD provided with the N2100BM.
So you can't have the media server if you don't have this CD.

I m not sure that the M-Box have the media server capabilities.

    media server for what exactly?
it has itunes and upnp as standard and you can install modules for stuff like slimserver and twonkymedia....

and its a nas isnt it so most decent music players will be able to access the shares directly...

Re: Thecus N2100 Yes Box & Evesham M-Box differences

itunes and slimserver are only for music streaming.
    Twonkymedia isn't free (30€).
Ushare seems to be the good choice, but I don't know how the module works and if it works.

Re: Thecus N2100 Yes Box & Evesham M-Box differences

what are you sharing to tho?
surely pretty much all ethernet based video players can access a normal share from the nas without the need for any media server to be installed...

Re: Thecus N2100 Yes Box & Evesham M-Box differences

Does the conversion from Evesham MBox to Thecus (detailed on the Thecus Wiki) work if you have not installed any hard drives? I have to 500gb Western Digitals. The MBox seems to see and identify them but I have been building Raid 0 for five hours now. I wonder whether it is because the early firmware 1.0.5 cannot really work with drives this large?

Any views or experience out there?

Re: Thecus N2100 Yes Box & Evesham M-Box differences

it will take a while to build a raid tho not sure about 5 hours...

as you have nothing on the disks it wouldnt hurt to update to the thecus firmware and start again would it...

Re: Thecus N2100 Yes Box & Evesham M-Box differences

I tried the Thecus Wiki instructions but using the username root and password suggested did not work. What I did was:

    1. Turned on the MBox
    2. Pressed and held the Reset button until the box beeped.
    3. Accessed the box from my computer to bring up the GUI at address 192.168.0.100
    4. Clicked on Login and entered root in the user name and TheCus@00% as the password, but the box would not let me in. I get "Authentication error: Invalid Password" I tried irresistable but that did not work either.

If I have a failed login do I need to go back and press the Reset button before each re-try?

    Can anyone help, please?

    Roger
