    Question N299 Five questions

    1. USB HDD;

    I have formatted a USB HDD as FAT32,
    According to the manual;

    The attached device will be located at \\192.168.1.100\usbhdd\usb1\1\ where 192.168.1.100 means the IP address of N299, usb1 stands for the first USB device, and 1 stands for the first partition

    That location cannot be found, the USB HDD is recognised as one USB HDD under NAS log in admin storage. The USB HDD is connected to the front panel USB port (the rear is occupied by my printer and the second rear USB port is still not usable)
    How do I access the USB HDD (200GB Maxstor ) files?
    Is the manual incorrect? (Its has been in some instances) Is there any other way to see the files on the USB HDD?

    2. Rear second USB2;

    Has anyone been able to use both?
    Can they be used by other USB items like say a Digital camera (I know, I can download using the front USB2 port).
    Can one connect a hub and use various devises via the N299?
    I would like to attach my MP3 player (Nomad Zen) and use one of the PC's to access and manipulate the files direct on the NAS (2 x HDD's) for example.
    Appear to me that there ought to be no real reason why one cannot use both ports at the back simultaneously.

    3. Changelogs;

    On the Thecus WIKI I found the 1.00.29 Beta1 firmware.
    This works well. Where can I find changelogs and/or discussions regarding firmwares for the N299?

    4. Network Printer;

    I have installed an Epson Stylus Photo R 310 as a network printer.
    It works fine when printing a test page and in general except on occasions it fails completely.
    Installation worked well and had no hiccups.
    Once when printing a PDF file and once when printing 4 photos to one sheet.
    Are there spooling memory restrictions in the N299?

    5. DDNS and ACL;

    I have DDNS set OK. When I set ACL on the files I loose my mapped network drives and the only way then to manipulate my NAS located files (it has 2 x HDD's) is to go via a user account each time. How can I set up so I can have mapped drives as well as restrictions to certain users via DDNS?
    I have tried all configurations and I cannot work out how, if it indeed is possible.

    All 5 questions have been posted on the "Techus User Group" but there no-one seems to know the answers to the above questions I have.

    I would appreciate to be enlightened on the above subjects please.

    Cheers,
    Tom

    Re: N299 Five questions

    Dear Sir,

    1. About the USB HDD, system preset a folder name USBHDD, since we plug a USB driver, and USBHDD would create a subfolder name 01, 02 or 03 dpened on the plug in sequency, and than we could access to this subfolder for USB driver.

    2. N299 support with 2 USB deivce only, even we plug a USB HUB or USB device with 3 ports, system would recognize first 2 plug in device only.

    3. Only offical version with release note or change log on http://www.thecus.com/dl.php , beta verison for specify user only.

    4. Due to system performance limitation, we would recommend choose N2100 if need printing huge size file .
    5. Due to Windows support 1 netwrok driver account only, if we mapping a netwrok without ACL before, after set the ACL we conldn't access to this folder, thus we would need remvoe the pervious saved account in Windows, please refer to 3ways to remove Windows XP saved network password - Thecus eSupport Center

    6. N299 doesn't support SSH.

    Smile Re: N299 Five questions

    Thanks Yvon,

    1. Noted but USBHDD if connected to the front USB port cannot be found what is the exact gateway?
    I used 192.168.1.100/usbhdd/usb1 (and various combinations after usbhdd)

    Update: I have now solved this by changing standard settings in the NAS folders.
    (Would have helped a lot if the manual was not so misleading and/or vague. You need to have the manual re-written, there are too many errors and omissions in the current version.)

    2. Why? What's the point having three USB ports and only two can be used? Surely it's not a hardware problem but rather a Linux programming issue. Quite a few Linux based units has been made to accept up to five USB ports and accepts a USB hub (powered) up to any number of attachments. Your manual says you can connect a USB HUB and there is no mention of any restrictions as to the total number of USB connections that hub can have.

    3. Noted. I realise that any beta versions has no changelogs, how come you don't issue firmware 25 - 28? (I am comfortable using beta versions of firmwares as I am a tech guy with +15 years IT experience <smiles>)

    4. What are the spool limitations ? Assume memory or processor limits the file size. (Thanks, but I do not have a need for a N2100 in the home set up I have)

    5. Great, I now have it working. I used your guide before and it did not work. I tried again and at first it did not work. It turns out that the PC need to be re-booted before any disconnections will occur. I did not think of that and it appear nor have you, may I suggest you add that to your guide.

    Thank you for your prompt answers to my questions.

    Cheers,
    Tom

    Yvon,

    Manual reads on page 65;

    quote;

    USB Storage Expansion
    The N299 supports external USB hard disks through its two USB ports. Once a
    USB hard disk has been successfully mounted, users can access the files on the
    USB hard disk under the USBHDD folder. The N299 supports up to 6 USB
    external storage devices.

    unquote.

    Why does the manual say this and you say something else. What's the go here? Can I connect say a 4 port USB hub on one of the unit's only two working USB ports and then on that hub connect 4 USBHDD's and they will number 01-04 and can be accessed ?

    Cheers,
    Tom

    I think the manual probably referred to stuff like multi-slot card readers.
    Although it would be great if I can hook up all 6 of my USB hdds to the N299

    Also wondering if its possible to run 2 drives in N299 without RAID (not even JBOD, but just 2 seperate drives).
