What to do after a Raid drive failure?

    Hi all,

I'm probably being a bit dim but just want to make sure I don't do something silly and lose a LOT of data !

    I'm running a Thecus N5200 - configured raid 5 using 3 drives + 1 Parity + 1 spare.

Unfortunately on sunday one of the drives failied.. the raid is now showing degraded.
The Disks used list has changed from 1,2,3,4,5 (blue) to 2,3,4,5 ... so looks like the spare has kicked in...

    Logs show..
    2008/07/28 09:43:03 Nas01 : The system Nas01 change to degrade mode.
2008/07/28 00:57:59 Nas01 : The system Nas01 is recovering the RAID and rebuilding is in progress.
    2008/07/28 00:57:59 Nas01 : Hard Disk 1 on Nas01 has an I/O error.
    2008/07/28 00:57:40 Nas01 : The system Nas01 change to degrade mode.
    2008/07/28 00:57:38 Nas01 : Hard Disk 1 on Nas01 has an I/O error.

Ok so it looks good , the spare is used and the raid looks like it started to rebuild.. So why is it still showing degraded ( 19 hours later ... ) . ?

I've ordered a replacement disk which shouldbe here tommorow... can I go ahead and hot swap drive 1, or should I wait for the rebuild to finish ? How can I tell if rebuild complete ... will it show in the logs.. will the raid become healthy ?

Or is it waiting for the replacement spare disk before the raid will flag healty ?

Any confirmation of next steps much appreciated !

    Daer Sir,

If Disk1 ou tof RAID and system recovering the RAID and rebuilding automatically from the spare HDD, please waiting system rebuilding RAID completely, and than repalce the Disk1 and join this HDD into spare.

    STORAGE->RAID CONFIG->DISK1->check SPARE box.

Re: What to do after a Raid drive failure?

    Hi Yvon,

    Thanks for the response.

System is still showing "degraded", over 2 days now since drive failure.
The spare drive is showing as used.
Drive 1 showing warning and not checked used or spare.
I can access all the files, so I am making up to date full backup before I do any changes.
Unsure if raid re-build complete , but very little drive activity. Would a reboot trigger re-build ?

    Many thanks

Re: What to do after a Raid drive failure?

    Dear Sir,

Since every N5200 power up and system would checking each RAID HDD, if RAID infomation match to each other, and system would assemble the HDD from same RAID infotmation to RAID, and user could rebuilding the RAID manaully.

Re: What to do after a Raid drive failure?

    Hi Yvon,

I've done a reboot and the RAID has come back healthy using the spare drive... It did'nt seem to rebuild so I guess it must have been doing that in the background... pehaps a bit more informative log information required?

Anyway... it looks like its sorted. Will replace the defective drive..

    Many thanks for your help.
