There is a problem with the 1.5TB drives in the N7700. tried several times, but get degraded Raid(5).

I paid £99.96 each plus vat for the drives from Lambda-Tek this week, and they had stock.

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

    £99.96 is pretty damned good.

Hopefully Scan will have dropped their price by the time I come to get another one.

I have sent my N7700 back to my reseller!!
And he was sending the N7700 with the 1,5 TB HDD´s
back to Thecus Germany. Thecus accept the return from my reseller
because they have no solution this time.
You should use the 1 TB HDD !
Thecus Germany told my reseller to resolve this problem with 1,5 TB HDD´s when the 1,5 TB HDD - ServerEdition will be appear! (NS...Edition e.g.)

That was the reason for my return the N7700

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

Well, the 1,5 TB seem's ok with the 5200pro , from reading this discussion, any new problem to say because seagate had to do an update to their disk?

May be, chris, if you did get the update your 7700 is ok now?

    regards

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

Seagate states that the 1.5TB drives are Desktop RAID. this means they should not be used in more than a RAID 0 or ! config with maximum of 2 drives. These ARE not enterprise drives and should NOT be used in ANY raid configuration. on top of that firmware versions SD15-SD19 suffer from vibration issues and the drives suddenly freezing, this is a common and well documented problem and there is a firmware fix from seagate depending what drive you have.
In the meantime i would NOT put these drives in ANY enclouse other than a single external drive caddy as these arent designed for multiple RAID use.

Quite a bit less actually, around 5.25TB.

Remember drive manufacturers count data differently to the OS, you also have the overhead of the file system on the disks.

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

I have 7x1.5TB drives fitted to N7700 and the indicated total capacity is 8372.3GB, stripe size=128KB, and File system Ext3.

There have been no freezes or hangs, the only disturbing thing has been status warning.

This is covered by Yvon's posts elsewhere.

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

    Chris,

Isnt there an issue with >8TBs on the N7700 and Ext3.

I was worried that 7 seagates 1.5tbs would be capped at exactly 8TBs, like yvonne was saying

    but its not true????

We get 8.37 TB with stripe 128??
Cool.. I thought Yvonne was saying 8 capped

    also.. 64kb vs 128kb stripe??

    p

I have upgraded the firmware in the N7700 to 2.01.06, The Total Capacity reported by the box is 8372.3GB and the Data Capacity is 7703.6GB. Both figures are as reported for a new raid5 without any added folders.

Ref your query Stripe sizes see here http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...TS,1735-4.html

I have picked 128KB as I store a lot of photographs , and AV stuff, most file sizes therefore are large.

I have not, as yet felt happy about entrusting my files to this system, as there is uncertainty about the combination of N7700 and 1.5TB hd's. I await with interest the resolution between Thecus and Seagate.

In the meantime I am trying out combinations of settings for the N7700.
I am in process of seeing what size the raid is with one less hd, will report back.

    Best regards Chris
