    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

thank you for the response chris,

so even though total capacity is 8.37TB... you can only use 7.7TB ??
    its that right
thats too bad.. you lose almost 1/2 a TB

Also, what stripe size do you recommend?
I am a photographer and videographer with large file sizes as well..

I thought most people go with 64kb stripe size?

    And ZFS or EXT3 structure?

    Phillip

Well I set my stripe to 128KB ZFS after some reading.

I have just completed a creation of just 6x1.5TB and the indicated total capacity is 6976.9GB, with a data capacity of 02GB/6419.6GB

    Hope this helps

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

    Dear Sir,

If total volume bigger than 8TB we could choose ZFS for more useable volume, but ZFS cost more system performance, so system allow 1 ZFS volume only, and multip RAID total support up to 3 sets, thus we could create 1 ZFS and 2 EXT3 volumes, or 3 EXT3 volumes.

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

let us know what to do, if we have 7x 1.5tb drives

128kb stripe size if mostly A/V files (media files)
    and
ZFS to get the full capacity

i JUST WANT ONE RAID 5 SET, THATS ALL... not 3 different sets

what should we do, people that own seagate 1,5tbs

    thanks

    Hi Patrick,
the last time a have a lot of trouble, too with the seagate 1,5 TB and
    my N5200Pro!!
It doesn`t matter which firmware (SD1A or SD17) I use:
in the last three or four weeks I have change five times a HDD.
    Reason: "Reallocated Sector"
I have sent them back to my reseller and he doesn`t order the 1,5 TB
from Seagate anytime!! - because he has a lot of returns of them now

    Regards

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

considering allt he problems with the n7700 and 1.5tb drive what can be recommended to work with this unit in 1tb ?

according to the compatibility matrrix only the seagate ES2 and the WD caviar green is listed.

The Caviar green isnt even an enterprise RAID drive and after all the issues with seagate drives the ES's themselves not been without problems that seems to leave little choice.

so why not the caviar black, WD RE3, the ultrastar, samsung Spinpoint F1. can anyone confirm they have used these or otehr drives with no issues, and why have thecus not tested ANY of the hitachi drives or the WD enterprise drives?

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

the seagate 1.5TB drives are desktop RAID ( 0 and 1) NOT ENTERPRISE RAID , and are not designed for use in more than a 2 drive configuration.

really if people actually paid more attention to what they are buying there wouldnt be this problem.
also the drives are NOT listed ont eh compatinility matrix, but then not many drives are. for 1tb thecus list the ES2 and the WD Caviar green ( which isnt even a RAID drive )

what about the RE3 , the Ultrastar, the SPinpoint F1.
come on thecus please get your act together on this and stop fobbing people off with esxcuses that its seagates fault. The SMART timings issue only happens on thecus units, the drives work fine in other external enclosures yet poiting the finger at seagate helps no one.

Lets have some test results to see if otehr people have tested other drives in 1TB capacity and also if they have had problems with 1.5TB drives in any other RAID enclosures.

this is a really good question for Yvon
    I had order a 7700 with 3TB, planning to upgrade in a little while like something to 7X1,5 seagate entreprise(hoping those will be matching perfectly?) or 7X2TB hitachi?? why not ;
anyway so for me and others like philip, who want safety, raid 5, and use only one volume, we should go for ZFS ? Right?
Yvon, you also say that it will cost more system performance, hope the horse power are there to manage the 16TB in the descrition of the unit on thecus web site!! So I hope it's ok?
it would be nice if you told us what to do for the best result having more than 8TB (limit with ext3)
    Thanks for advice

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

I am looking to buy a five drive bay NAS at the moment and have been looking at both the Thecus N5200B Pro and the QNAP TS-509Pro. I had also intended to use Seagate 1.5Tb drives in which ever one I purchased. The Thecus unit is looking the better one as it is A$400 cheaper and does everything I need it to do, but the 1.5Tb drive issue seems to be a show stopper.

I note on the QNAP hard drive compatibility list it lists the Seagate 1.5Tb (ST31500341AS) drive as being compatible with their unit PROVIDED "Special handling of disabling write cache on HDD because of the known issue on HDD firmware version SD 15, 17 and 18 of Seagate 1.5TB (ST31500341AS)."

Perfomance issues of disabling the write cache aside, I was wondering if anyone who has had trouble with the 1.5Tb Seagate drives had tried this as a possible solution?

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

I've updated the firmware on my Seatgate 1.5 drives and have no issues at all with them

My issue is with the RAID size of 8TB, are there plans to fix this?

I'm not an expert on Ext3 but is does say on Wikipedia that if a 8KB block size is used on the file system that the limit moves to 16TB. Would this be possible from Thecus?

Given that 2TB sata drives may well be on the market in 2009 it would make sense.

I'm aware of the ZFS option, but I use a Popcorn media player and the best playback comes via NFS which is not available on ZFS. SMB just doesn't work at all for me with the Popcorn

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

For me using popcorn and 5200 pro + 7700 , smb is just fine actually for all files (hd, dts, etc...)

The problem i think if using zfs system files the popcorn will not recognise this file system?

Am I right or not? If anybody can answer for asfish123 and me

Because I'm planning also to put 7x 2TB in the 7700

    Thanks for any comments

    regards

I have mine formated with ZFS but not used it yet with my popcorn. I'll see if the file system is recognised this week if I get some time and post back.

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

If You use Samba then the underlying filesystem is irrelevant for the client - samba is hiding the original filesystem form the client - using NFS is a different topic.

    Re: 1.5TB Seagate drives

There has been a new PCH A-100 Firmware update released (A-110 will follow)

After installing my playback issues via SMB have been resolved. This weekend I'll move some hi-def files to the 7700 and post playback results.
