Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
Chris,
Please give me the Green light or thumbs up.
I have 14x of the Seagates in SD17 firmware.. Been waiting to hear if you got your Thecus N7700 to work now with Raid 5/6 and all the 1,5TBs populated in an array.
No drop outs?
No problems streaming?
Everything is ok ????
If you say Yes, and all is good... Ill go ahead and order 2x of the thecus boxes
thanks
phillip
Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
phildog,
If you do that, you really should put together a little project piece about it. There are lots of us throughout the main Hexus forums that would love to see photos and progress logs of 14 drives going into two of the coolest NAS boxes around at the moment :D
If you do want to let me know if I can help at all with the forum side of things (taking inot account your low post count).
Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
I just bought 2 Seagate ST31500341AS P/N: 9JU138-300 Firmware: SD17.
I've applied no firmware and I formatted on of the drives in windows without a problem (quick format, will try regular format later) just to see if I got the Monday copy or not.
I've tried watching a 700mb movie, a 2gb (medium res) movie, a 6.5gb (720p) movie and a 7.9GB (1080p) movie. I watched all of them for 30-60 seconds and no freeze...
I've tried transferring 37 GB in one go and no freeze...
What more tests should I do?
After these tests I just made and some reading on the seagate support forum I've come to believe that not all of the disks are broken. That's probably why they don't just publicise the firmware.
So my advice to all, test each disk individually before you start playing with firmwares and such.
Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
The Firmware update of my 1.5TB drives from SD17 to SD1A for my 7 drives seems to be working just fine.
I should point out that the update file Brinks-4D8H-SD1A.iso should only be used with 1.5TB drives that have the P/N 9JU138-300 or 336 with existing firmare SD15 throu SD19. (ref Seagate)
Pascal, I used EXT3, not tried ZFS. Only tested the system on Raid5, all tests are so long winded!
Phillip, I have only tested N7700 fully loaded for a short while, but can say that with the SD17 firmware, I was having trouble at every turn. Now, after 48 hours or so there have been no problems. I have copied 1TB+ of info and have streamed large HD *.ts and *.mkv files with no problems at all, even streamed same HD file to 3 PC's simultainiously with no hangs, feeling a lot happier now.
Happy to try further tests if necessary as I intend to 'have a good play' before loading any important information.
Yvon: Any news yet how Thecus are getting on with their testing?
Best regards
Chris
Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
Dear Sir,
We running the 7 pcs HDD on the new frimwar for RAID0, after 72 hours samba buring still working fine, we will keeping on this operation.
Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
Chris,
Thanks a lot for the update. I yesterday ordered my N7700 and expect delivery by next week.
I was wondering if you, or any other Thecus forum visitor or employe, can help me answer one question. Basically I'm wondering whether I should create a RAID5 + 1 Spare or a RAID6 system on my 7 1.5TB discs. I prefer one big volume rather than several smaller ones and 'wasting' more space for the redundant discs. I used to have 16x 400GB discs in a RAID6 system which worked flawlessly.
I always have a disc spare on my shelf and the 'longest' period I would be unable to change the disc is probably half day max ...
Oh yes ... the system is of course attached to a UPS ;-).
Thanks,
Pascal

Hi Chris
can you copy small files (less than 100 Kb) to the N7700 with Raid 5 and notice the reaction of the N7700? -- degraded Raid or so....
Please let me know

Pascal, you will be pleased to hear that all is working well here. I have found this link that may help your question. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/314

Hello Rainer
N7700 had no problems copying 1500 files in a batch, all under 100k

Seagate Drive ID's 1TB+ 1.5TB
ST31000340AS Gamer PCs High-End PCs Mainstream PCs Workstations Desktop RAID 1 or 0 systems
ST31000340NS 24x7 operation and 1.2 M hrs. MTBF ( Enterprise version )
ST31000340SV 24x7 reliability with > 1 million hours MTBF and < 1 percent AFR ( rec for video use)
Since Thecus HD Compatibility test shows the NS series as being compatible why use the others, other than the obvious price difference
Seagate ST31500341AS is presumably for the same use as the 1TB drive above.
Is there a NS series 1.5 TB or SV Series 1.5 TB as I cannot find a release of the NS series and there only one google hit for the ST31500341NS.

There is only 1 1.5 terrabyte disk, and that is ST31500341AS.
The other models doesn't exist in 1.5 TB, nor does the other vendors have 1.5 TB disks afaik.
Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
The NS serie from Seagate`s 1,5 TB should be released for 12/2008.
But thats not an official statement from Seagate!
Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
Can I get a green light from Chris or Rainer, that I should go ahead and purchase TWO.. N 7700 Thecus boxes.
I want to use them with all seagate 1.5tb drives, and i have 14x of them waiting on the shelf, to go into the thecus

Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
So, @ Thecus - Yvon,
Are there any final results as to wether Seagate's 1.5TB drives are compatible with n7700 device?
I've noticed that you have included some input in your latest firmware regrading the seagate's firmware update.
What is the final verdict ? Are they fine for n7700 usage ?
Also, I've heard some issue regarding the use of them within th n7700 box.
Some kind of problems with reallocating sectors (due to SMART value) even when the drives are brand new.
Is that true ? Are there plans of fixing them from you part as well ?
Looking forward for your feedback!
T.
Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
Dear Sir,
Even we tested this HDD working on N7700, but this HDD would make the "Reallocated Sector" or "Current Pending Sector" from the HDD SMART value very eaily, and NAS UI would mark this HDD at WANRING status.
In reason of the "Reallocated Sector" or "Current Pending Sector" both come from HDD SMART itself, and other 1TB HDD form Seagate, WD, HGST or Samsung doesn't make this value easily, thus we worry this HDD would out of RAID for the long run, so current we won't recommend this HDD on N7700.

Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate
Yvon,
Do you plan to address the Seagate1.5T reallocated sector issue, in a forthcoming firmware of yours ?
If so, when that should be expected ?
