Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate

    TO YVON @ THECUS,

Is what deanpm posted an official firmware update ?
Will there be a change to the S.M.A.R.T. policy of the product after all?
Is that supposed to be secure for all the rest of the users that use discks other than 1.5Seagate ?
    Please specify!

Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate

    Daer Sir,

As the description about the TXT file from the beta firmware just for some user concern the SMART warning messsage, this version only open the tolerance for Reallocated Sector Count up to 32, if this value more than 32 and system would showing warning again, also this Reallocated Sector Count is a signal to reflact HDD status for user know.
Even the pervious firmware just report current HDD SMART status for user know, but we know some user doesn't like HDD showing warning if Reallocated Sector Count more than 0, thus we relase this beta version for user who doesn't went to see the warning messgae, but user have to take care HDD health status too.

Thank you thecus, random powerdowns have stopped, factory reset worked. The beta firmware removed the over zealous SMART warning.

    Regards Chris

How reliable is ZFS as its ported from Solaris.

The N5200 was Linux, what is the N7700 ?

    Linux, FreeBSD or NetBSD.

Does anyone have ssh installed so they can do a uname-a and also check the directory structure and /etc files. Each OS has distinctive differences. I should be easy to work out even if uname had been bastardized.

Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate

It's slightly off topic but ...

I have three N5200 Pro, and two N7700. The N5200s are filled with Seagate's ST31000340AS firmware "AD14". The 7700s all filled with Seagate's ST31000340NS firmware "SN05". All of the server are configured with raid 6. So far, I received only one reallocation count from one of the NS drives and nothing else. The N5200s have uptime over 291 days and the newer 7700s have uptime only over 7 days.

Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate

an update on this i have flashed n7700 with latest firmware and the unit is still flagging a warning on a drive that has 14 reallocated sectors. and not the 32 as quoted.
When you consider there are 512bytes per sector thats 2 sectors per kb.
    rounding a drive to 1000 thats 2000 sectors per MB, 2000000 per gb. x 15 = 3000000 sectors per 1.5TB drive
so with a failure of 10 sectors thats something like 0.00001%
Thecus is the only NAS box ( or DAS) that i have come across with this problem, so maybe its about time they finally fixed this properly once and for all and introduced a far better firmware that can at least allow a sensible amount of reallocated sectors.

Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate

I *LIKE* the fact they warn on 32 reallocated sectors.

A good drive should never have ANY! So I want to know if there are any problems lurking.

It is like turning the lights on in a dark room. Do you walk in without light and hope you won't trip or do you turn on the light to see if your path is clear.

As an aside, my system has a different vendors RAID 1 unit. An older IDE 2 disk raid.

The reallocated count went from 0 for a few months, up to 8. I ignored it and a month later, the drive is failing in a way that hangs my system. Since it isn't 'BAD', the raid keeps it active, slowing/hanging everything because of its 'delayed writes'

So, the moral is, if you put a disk in, and it is new with realloc sectors, use the number the first time the drive is in. And buy quality where the initial count is 0, and stays zero.

Re: N7700 Problems with 1.5TB Seagate

I know it's on the compatibility list (though knowing Thecus that doesn't necessarily mean much!)....is the 2TB Seagate confirmed as working fine?
