Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Hi Folks,
Apart from some minor niggles, I'm very happy with the Thecus I have (n3200pro), but the mediabolic software is, quite frankly, rubbish!! :censored:
I put the motion forward that Thecus produces an officially supported version of TwonkyMedia for their products. I think all here would be very happy. And Thecus, you'd have a lot less support headaches.
If the issue is because it's a licenced product, then provide it unlicenced. I'd be happy to pay the extra. The worst thing is spending hundreds on a new RAID box and then being crippled by poor performing software.
So, if you think this is a good idea, get your name in this thread now!
p.s. There appears to be a newly released TwonkyMedia server 5.0. Now's an ideal time to build support!
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
I support this 1000% Twonky support is CRITICAL to the success. I'm considering selling my 5200 Pro because it doesn't work properly with Twonky!
THECUS LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS, otherwise you WONT HAVE ANY!
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
45 people have read this thread - and only one person is interested enough in Twonky to post a reply/vote?!?!
Come on!! :help:
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
+1 from me also!!!
I am using the twonkymedia server to stream hd video content from my N5200 to a PS3 over a wireless network and works like a charm!!!
Come on Thecus...for a product line as good (and expensive...) as yours you should provide us with a decent working media server!!!

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Alas, the example you linked to is a community supported effort and not officially support by Thecus.
On top of that, your links are n5200 specific. Doesn't help anyone with other (and pro) models as they often have a different motherboard config.

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
now all we need is an offical version worked on by thecus and not a partially working one done by a user
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
@TAKTAK: What about customers not using the 5200 or 5200pro? Did you not read my post properly? Sorry, but my case still stands.

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
I see your point, as there are only about 4 that have community support with twonky, but the likelyhood of Thecus actually putting out an official version is low IMHO, as in their eyes the default functions well, otherwise it wouldn't be the default version...

I don't see that as being a problem. It will probably be better supported and updated quicker being a community effort rather than a Thecus addon.

N5200 and N5200Pro share the same modules. Unless Thecus have changed something in the OS, these should, in theory, work on the N7700 and N8800 as well as they are all x86 based systems. If they don't work straight off, I would suspect only minor changes are needed.
As the N5200, N7700 and N8800 series units are advertised as being enterprise systems, and they already come with a media server, I can't see Thecus adding a second to these devices.
As for the N3200, I can sympathise with that. It is billed as a home unitso should come with better media support.

I'm hoping we can get this as an official option (unlicenced is fine) by making them realise that the current default is useless! :)
The alternative is to plead to the community to build the modules, but I think I stand less chance of success there as some models appear to be more popular than others - and that's fair enough.

Alas, I've just bought a n3200pro, for which there is little such support. I'm using it in a SOHO environment, mainly for media management. To not be able to distribute among my DLNA clients in the house is beyond me. I can't even view more than ten music folders in a directory - It is a buggy mess. My old Linkstation with Twonky did this and a lot more - perfectly.
To just ask for the option for my box would be a little unfair - and having noticed a good number of 'mediadiabolic' issues among various threads, I thought it would be a good option for all! :)

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
The unsuppported twonky media file from Onmedia.dk is frankly rubbish, it doesnt work with Linn UPNP devices and as a result Thecus is not supported by Linn because the support/software is so incredibly poor
Infact the software on the Thecus in general is poor so thats why mine is for sale and ill be going to QNAP. At least they release decent/working software

Sorry, but the advice in the linn forum was to set the IP of the thecus nas to a fix IP which might solve the problems and that they have tested it successfully with this configuration.
Linn devices are also not contained in the client dabase of the twonkymedia server, so the devices are treated as "generic media receivers" , which may cause also some issues.
The software of the module is the standard linux twonkymedia distribution only packed in the thecus module structure.
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Hi Peterfu, I have had a static IP on the NAS for a very long time - it does not fix the issue at all. I've tried Generic Media reciever and other options, again the issue remains.
I'm not sure who tested this successfully but Twonky, Thecus and Linn does NOT work together.
Id love someone to be able to fix my issue.. its driving me mad. Ive got my Thecus for sale at the moment incase it can't be fixed...

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
So Thecus, is there any possibility of getting a Twonky module - or better still, as an outright replacement for the mediabolic server?

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Sure, it's in bold. Forget the case, the poor support, poor software was enough for me to SELL the unit. I sold it last night on Ebay and purchased a QNAP 509 PRO today.. Just stick and tired of Thecus problems.

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Sorry to hear that. It does look as though Thecus have now cleared out their downloads folder and there's no beta folder anymore. Looks like a step in the wrong direction.
Alas, judging by the lack of support and extremely poor communication from Thecus, I too am thinking of getting rid of my box - My patience is wearing extremely thin.
It's a shame that Thecus probably won't even understand the comment above.
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Hi,
although supporting your query about the really poor support by Thecus I can't confirm vanishing of the beta folder. It is still there: http://www.thecus.com/Downloads/beta/
Bye

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Bizarre!!!
Perhaps I checked while it was going some through some maintenance? Anyway, not to worry - I'm glad to see it's returned. :)

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
I have an N7700 and I installed the Twonky Media module from the 5200 and it works fine. So in my mind the Thecus already support TwonkyMedia. My only complaint is no support for subtitles with TwonkyMedia no.srt support.

May I ask You if You had to change something on the module or does it install from scratch. I'm interested in this cause I'm the maintainer of this module.

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
What kind of changes would we need to do in order to install the TwonkyMedia server in the N3200Pro?
Has anybody tried it already and made it work?
Peter?

Luís

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Yes, an interesting avenue in the absence of anything else... :)

Sorry, but I have no access to a N3200Pro and also no detailled informations.
As there already existing some modules for the N3200pro, may be contacting the author is a good idea - unfortunatly he has not included the sources in his modules.

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Well i might have made some breakthru, i actually was able to use your N5200 TwonkyMedia module, eventhough i had to manually copy it to the N3200Pro and start it manually, but all worked and now i am able to use the media server capabilites of Twonky.
I guess it would only mean that i would need to be able to compile the module in order to be able to make it installable on the Thecus Admin GUI.
My problem currently is that i have no Linux machine :D
I guess that's not so bad, i will download a distro and install it over a VM and use it to compile the changed module!
Well it looks good, so i guess maybe we will have a N3200Pro Twonky Media Server module soon :P
Regards All,
Luís

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Sounds promising - Pls let us know how you get on... :))
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
There is nothing special to compile - the included make file packs the content in an archive with the extention .mod - check the existing N3200pro modules after You have installed them (i.e the module for SSH access) what are the differences in the scripts or config files - and then run make to pack the files in the mod archive.

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
What is the benifits of setting up the thecus box as a media center. I myself left it as a server. I use popcorn hour I have no problems. Plays everything.

That depends on Your personal environment - not all media clients are able to access file shares directly vie CIFS, SMB or NFS - for that clients You need a streaming server.
And some streaming servers offers You more functionalities. With the new version of twonkymedia i.e You can also access You contents on flickr and youtube.

-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Popcorn hour has flickr, youtube etc etc built in
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
What does popcorn hour run on? Your server?
I think the idea here is to have the Thecus run with self contained services, for those that don't run a separate server. This is certainly what I'd like to achieve for efficiency, etc.
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
I know that the popcorn devices are great - thinking at the moment to buy one, but as I said - not all devices have this ability and i.e my NOXON audio only clients need a streaming server.
So it depends very much on everyones environment and needs.
@jDub : popcorn hour is a hardware media client see here : http://www.popcornhour.com

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Thanks for that Peter, I was getting mixed up with Roxio's Popcorny thing. I see now, interesting hardware client....I guess it is similar to what a lot of people are using the PS3 for, in addition to it's game playing capabilities. Strange name though... :)

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Well it turns out the very helpful Thecus community are now producing Twonky modules for the N3200PRO!
There is already a v4 module available here. Works nicely.
There is also a v5 module being tested at the moment - Hopefully it will be completed soon.
The main thing is that already with v4, there is a huge jump in features/performance. It's a shame Thecus didn't have the foresight to do this themselves...

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
I am a user of the Thecus N3200 not N3200 Pro, and I'd love to have an updated version of a TwonkyMedia server module come out for the N3200. Can anyone help in making this happen? Thanks a lot!
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
I installed the Twonky mediaserver module for 5200 on my N4100pro and it was instantly recognized on my network.
The Mediabolic only show up once in months after I repeatedly enabled/disabled and rebooted the NAS.
I have both a DVico 6500A and a Mvix Ultio, both of which now see the twonky4100.
Frankly I am frustrated that this type of software (mediabolic) is included with the N4100Pro. As I originally was going after the Dvico support people, and then have to apologize for what is a thecus problem.
Thanks to the twonky people. It's got my vote.
Makes me debate the ReadyNAS which appears to have a much better support group and quality control over their products.
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
All I can think is that licensing for Mediabolic is a lot cheaper than Twonky. Mediabolic is frankly, a terrible piece of software that is ruining an excellent piece of hardware. I would imagine DLNA support is a prime requirement for someone buying a NAS for a home environment...?

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
Interesting thread!
Agree that the media server which comes out of the box by Thecus is questionable.
Has anyone tried yet to install Twonky on the N0503? (N5200_TWONKYMEDIA_2.00.18)
Would be interested to hear if there are any users out there which have already tried so and if so what kind of issues they run it too.
And yes, I would definitely vote for a better media server such as Twonky.
-
Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
The n5200-TwonkyMedia-Nodul 2.00.18 runs without problems on my n0503.

Re: Vote for Twonky NOW!!
I've got teh thecus n2200. does teh twonky modul wordk on this also?
