Re: N7700 Teething Issues
righto im having real issues with this bloody drive and getting bored with it!
firstly i created the sdh1 directory and using phpfilemgr mooched and found what i assume is a 'profile' for sdh1 in the dev directory so it knows what it is i guess.
but on issuing the mount command i get
Quote:
mount: special device dev/sdh1 does not exist
root@127.0.0.1:~# mount /dev/sdh1 /raid0/data/usbhdd/esata/sdh1
mount: /dev/sdh1 is not a valid block device
im going to go away and try to knoppix format.
p.s. im on FW 2.01.06
in a bit!
Re: N7700 Teething Issues
right well.
i have done the following if it is of any interest to anyone -
i booted into knoppix 3.6 and couldnt see the hdd but after hunting around it appeared to be /sda1 not /dev/ but something else i cant remember!
i tried to mount it in order to format but nothing..
so i plugged it in on my xp machine and formatted it NTFS.
from there i rebooted knoppix and there it was, the same as my two partitions of my laptop drive...
i then usedt QTParted and reformatted in ext3.
NOW on rebooting into windows and connecting into my n7700 with esata drive connected i see /dev/sdh1 detailed still as an NTFS f/s so i have used the mke2fs -j command which i understand to be the ext2 file system with journaling support [being the -j?]
im learning!
....
....
....
writing inode tables
...
...
And the winner is...

Re: N7700 Teething Issues
righto, am now copying 500GB to the esata. or 'satay' drive as it will be known!
this time i know its doing it because i can hear it clunking!
is there any way of getting a progress bar or % meter in ssh?
Re: N7700 Teething Issues
fine that it is finally working.
No, theres no progress bar, but adding the option -v (i.e cp -Rv <source> <destiniation>) prints out every file which is actually copied

Re: N7700 Teething Issues
-v will be just the job as my 500GB is only 30 files or so so i will be able to watch them go across and log them as they go.
iv been suprised at how easy this has all been to pick up, i think i might try and learn a bit more and if i can get the right drivers move over to linux as its much more versatile. or at least dual boot.
finally, i have estimated 85MB/s transfer rate so far, bearing in mind eSATA by my thinking should be able to do 375MB/s so half it for good measure 200MB/s i would have thought i could get near the limit of my drive which i assume is 100-120MB/s
or am i dreaming!?
regards
john
Re: N7700 Teething Issues
One of the limitations of the transfer speed is the software raid used on the N7700, so 85MB/s is fine in my opinion.
Linux is not so hard, as everything could be done on the commandline, but modern distributions have also nice GUI to work with. If You want to try it, then I would suggest not a dual boot in the beginning, but a virtual computer - i.e i use Virtual box and have there installed Opensuse. The advantage ist that You can set a recovery point - I do this always after I have finished my base installation and afterwards after sucessfull installation of software or configuration changes. If You damage the the system You can easily return to the recovery point and start again. After some time a dual boot is the next step and then a linux box alone.
I have started some years ago with an old PC - not powerfull enough for windows any more - where I set up a linux fileserver (=NAS). Don't ask how often I started from scratch, but finally it worked for 3 or 4 Years without any problem.

thanks for the link. was looking for some commandline options
