    N7700 Raid degrate

    Hello,

I have problems from the first moment on I bought the N7700
first with zfs and samba, then after I switch to ext3 it looks ok. (thecusforum.eu/showthread.php?t=1021)

But later on when I used files which have to be unzipt (like XP iso) the data in the files seems to be corrupted
This morning when the backup from my server was made one of my HD was degrated from the raid5...

    2008/12/30 08:53:33 N7700 : Disk 7 on N7700 has been removed.
    2008/12/30 03:33:13 N7700 : Hard Disk 7 on N7700 has an I/O error.
    2008/12/30 03:33:13 N7700 : Hard Disk 7 on N7700 has an I/O error.
    2008/12/30 03:33:10 N7700 : The system N7700 change to degrade mode.
    2008/12/30 03:33:08 N7700 : Hard Disk 7 on N7700 has an I/O error.

I checked the disk with WD diag tool and nothing is wrong. I use 7 disks type WDC WD1001FALS-0
Could you please give me an answer what could be wrong, I am loosing my confidence in this box which cost me including the disks about 1750 euro.

Are they the desktop WD drives? Google for WDTLER .. it is a tool that tells the drives to operate in RAID mode. It should help stop the drives from dropping out of the array by actually failing quicker when they find a bad sector .. the controller can then rebuild the data from the other drives (I presume you're using RAID 5 or 6 on ext3??)

    Re: N7700 Raid degrate

Yes, I use Raid5 on Ext3 because I had some serious problems earlier in combination with ZFS.
How do I use the program on my WD disks? Do I have to remove them from the NAS and launch the util on an other computer?

    regards,

    W.

    Re: N7700 Raid degrate

    Dear Sir,

If system showing "Hard Disk 7 on N7700 has an I/O error.", means system found some bad sector on this HDD or can't reading data from some sector on this HDD.

Please try with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows, or HDTUNE to checking any bad sector on the HDD:

    Yvon,

Can you confirm that the disktype WDC WD1001FALS-0 is supported in the N7700 because I don't find it on the hardisk compatibility list?

    regards,
    W.

    Re: N7700 Raid degrate

I used WDTLER on my WD harddisk and used TLER-ON, I deleted the partitions by hand from the earlier degrated drive and put it back in the N7700, the system is rebuilding now. Thanks to gagaga for pointing me to this tool and let's see what happens. hopefully the system wiil be stable.

    Re: N7700 Raid degrate

You're welcome - if you haven't done already i'd power down the system and run wdtler against all of the drives. It's a great tool - pity other drive makers don't have something similar as i'd prefer to build my arrays from a mix of drives to avoid bad batch syndrome.

    Re: N7700 Raid degrate

    Dear Sir,

The WDC WD1001FALS doens't listed on the N5200 HDD support list, regarding to the I/O error issue we would recommend inspect this HDD from the tool from HDD manufactory would be better, if the tool found the bad sectoer or other issues, we would contact wit HDD manufactory for RMA service for your user right.

    Re: N7700 Raid degrate

FYI - The WD RE3 has TLER Write enabled at 7 seconds and TLER Read disabled.

The Wiki on TLER says that is the optimum for a raid environment, and to leasve the default for RE2 and RE3 drives.

    Hi there,

It looks like I'm having a similar problem with my 7 WD15EADS (see here http://www.thecusforum.eu/showthread...=5934#post5934).

Is your N7700 still working ok?

I had activated WDTLER (7s for both read and write) from the beginning.

I am wondering if I should use 7s read and disabled for write, like the RE / RE GP drives.

    Anyone has an idea?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,

After the improvements I have made with the WD tool the system was stable till now.
So my recommendation is use the WD tool and these disk will work fine in your system.

    regards,
    W.

Thanks for the reply Wouterb, but I HAD activated WDTLER from day one.

Could you tell me if you used the defaults (7s for both read and write) or if you changed them?

I'm thinking of deactivating TLER, because I have just had a third drive failing now, and there is nothing wrong with the drives when I test them.
