I was wondering if anybody try those in a 7700.
I nearly order them since thecus said they officially support enterprise hdd but... this one not yet on the official compatibility list from thecus.
Any comment welcome...

Mine are the WD1002FBYS, so far so good!
Using 7 of these with XFS file system, screenshot below:
(side note: it took approximately 6 hrs to build the RAID)

thanks Abbey,
so it seems nobody get the RE4 in a 7700, well they just coming to the market so...
Anyway no reasons why it souldn't work well, the WD 1002 FYPS is ok so...
I'm ready to order 7 WD2002FYPS but still thinking about the bad experience with the seagate 1.5 TB...
So any comments, experience, from thecus also ... will be welcome
Regards
I now have 5 of these RE4-GP beasts running smoothly in my N5200 Pro.. 7.8TB free space, let's see how long that's going last ;-)
I have 7 in an N7700.
I am worried though. The new beta firmare asks the user to send in their config.bin file if the WD 2tb drives fall out of the array.
Why would they say that, BY MODEL, if there wasn't a problem they have been seeing?
I've stayed with firmware 2.00.15 as the release notes for the 2.01 beta warned about problems with some Seagate and WD disks (not the RE4 specifically but plenty of other similar drives). My recommendation would be to downgrade to 2.00.15 or .16 - once the RAID is degraded it's a lot less fun to do. You can find the procedure for downgrading somewhere in the forums.
I have a mirror break with 4 of guys, 1 disk drops out of the Raid, but a was also stresstesting my N7700 with copying 200 GB, i removed the raid and try again, i hope this is not a problem Firmware 2.01.09
UPDATE: Drive still dropping out of RAID, I'm going to test all of the 4 RE4 GP Disk maybee i find something
UPDATE 2: Drives still dropping out of RAID, WD test tool says all drives are ok, no bad sectors!
UPDATE 3: Dont upgrade to 2.01.10.4 beta, your drive will hang in formatting!
UPDATE 4: Downgrade to 2.01.8 and zero fill my disks with WD Diag tool, i'm rebuilding again!
UPDATE 5: Disk still dropping out, now i try 2.01.10.12 thecus.com/Downloads/beta
hi doubeld1979,
how is it going with firmware 2.01.10.12 ?
I have also a N7700 with 7 re4-gp, and now after arround 2tb data transfer, one drop out! raid degraded!!
here we go again, bad experience again.... (the 1.5 tb from seagate i'm talking about)
apparently i have the choice to put the drop out one on spare and apply? will that rebuilt the raid 5 with the 6 others (if one more drop out during process, all data loss!!)
what the best to do if i don't want to lose data?
Thanks for any answer and sharing
If thecus support can help, i really apreciate
He is still rebuilding, is very slow, about 2000 minutes after the dropout, maybee its working after that!? if you dont want to lose youre data, wait for a stable Thecus, if its not dropping out for a week its stable for me!
All 2 TB harddrives are removed off the HDD Compatibility List thecus.com/Downloads/HDD_List/N7700_N8800_HDD_list_2009-08-19.pdf
With new firmware still dropping out, time to contact Thecus
I did click on apply after cross spare for the one drop out, tooks about 10 hours to rebuilt and...
Nice surprise, everything back to normal : raid 5 ok with the 7 re4-gp ok also! all my data is still there!
For how long....

Something I forgot to say and could be important...
First a warning appear on one disk, Current Pending Sector 3 !
So i decided to do a Bad Block Scan and i left...
When I came back the disk was drop out the raid and raid 5 degraded
That the way my problem started.
Just had a new drop out, 2.0.10.12 isn't fixing it, i have contacted Thecus about this still no reaction!
Me also! V2.01.09
Well that doesn't sound good at all and let's hope thecus find a way to resolve this problem....
They said that they will give full support for the 2TB HDD....
We are waiting....????
As mentioned before I have the following setup: 5 x WD2002FYPS in RAID5 in a N5200PRO box.
I had a lot of problems with this box, disks were reporting I/O errors and were dropped from the RAID.
I opened a case at Thecus and they asked me to downgrade the firmware and send them some config files. I did all that but I didn't hear from them until last weekend. I did receive the following email:
Apparently they were waiting for me. I asked them what they want but so far they didn't respond at all.Quote:
This message concerns your ticket #PHI-xxxxxxx. We have not received any response back from you in 168 hours, and would like to know if you consider this issue to be resolved. If you have any further questions, simply respond to this e-mail.
Sorry for the separate post but I wanted to be sure that the information below is separated from my previous post.
As mentioned before I have the following setup: 5 x WD2002FYPS in RAID5 in a N5200PRO box.
I had a lot of problems with this box, disks were reporting I/O errors and were dropped from the RAID.
I have removed all disks from the box and disabled TLER (see also, add the http yourself, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TLER) on every disk.
Reinstalled the disks, recreated the array (may not be necessary), and the box is running fine now for a couple of days.
It's hard to tell whether this resolves the problem but before this I was not able to keep the box up and running for more than a couple of hours.
I have got the same problem with my N7700 after seven days: Raid degraded -- then rebuild --- restarting and Raid degraded....
I am using the HDD`s "out of the box" with Firmware 04.0
TODAY THECUS HAS PUBLISHED A NEW BETA: 2.01.10.14!!!
"...Changed the SATA driver from mvsas 0.5.2 to MV64xx 3.1.0.0903 to
fix the WD2002FYPS and WD20EADS HDD degraded issue."
Let´s try
my System: 7 x WD RE4, XFS-Filesystem, RAID 5
Thanks Rainerstratmann for the info, lets give it a try!
Western Digital is not helping directly to customers:

I'm having all kinds of issues with my N8800 and 8 1.5TB WD drives and I'm getting that same response from WD and from PCMall as well. I've dealt with this problem since May and no one wants to help. BTW...the new firmware did not wrk for me. 4 drives dropped at the same time.
This is a bunch of BS.
I have tested the new 2.01.10.14 with my N7700 and the seven WD RE4 HDD`s in
Raid5:
Reading and writing some TB of data, power off, restart, etc. and till today there
is no Raid degraded so I am very very happy....
Thanks RainerStratmann for sharing,
I think i will uptade also my N7700 as I have exactly the same config as you..
mine is off right now, when i will restard it's going to show raid 5 degraded and disk 4 drop out, do I need to rebuilt the raid do you think before I upgrade the firmware or no...
Thanks.
Hi patrickc63,
to be sure you will not get a further "Raid degraded" update the firmware while
"Raid is rebuilding" and restart until the rebuilding is finished.
I have done so and it was working well in this kind....
Hi RainerStratmann,
Well unfortunaly I did rebuilt the raid and then upgrade, i had 3 disk red light and tell me to shutdown what I did , when i restart everything ok, since then stop, restart, transfer some data, not much more, being busy...
Seems to be ok so far...?
Thanks for sharing
Waiting for an official software release so...?
Hi RainerStratmann,
is your 7700 still running smooth so far?
Mine doesn't another drop out , do you think i can dowload the same firmware again the way you did so!
regards
Hi Patrickc63,
yes, it´s running properly -every day for some hours-
What´s the firmeware of yours WD RE4
Many greetings
Hi RainerStratmann,
The firmware is 4.0 for all of them
By the way i did rebuilt and at the same time upgrade again to 2.01.10.14 then reboot, i haven't tried yet a lot so, it seems that the problem appears when streaming video from it...
Regards
No more problems for me anymore, replaced one bad RE4 and its running smooth right now, with latest beta firmware :)
Sorry for being agry Thecus, it was for me a Western Digital problem!
Hi doubeld1979,
Mine is still not ok, i suppose i have to check all my HDD.
Did you use the WD test tools for that, do I have to test them out of the N7700!
I have more than 2TB data already on a raid five.
Thanks for sharing
regards
I used western digital tool but found nothing, i tried HDtach and 1 disk that most of the time droped out, was more then 100MB/s slower then my other 3 disks.
Maybee you can shutdown your Thecus and test you drives with your pc and they place back in the right order, no data can't be lost
BTW N7700/N7700SAS/N8800/N8800SAS beta firmware V3.00.04 is out now http://www.thecus.com/Downloads/beta
Thanks doubeld1979,
After you say that i give a try to the new firmware, ajax interface!
not yet enought time to test everything
regards
Just a followup.
All 8 2tb re4 in a dell md1000 in raid-6
4+TB written to it, used constantly, 3 consistency checks run.
NOOO errors, at all
None on any drive
So enough about DELL!
WHAT IS THE CASE WITH THECUS n7700 AFTER ALL ?
ANYONE FROM THECUS ? ANY OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE MATTER ?
ANY WORKING FIRMWARE AFTER SO MUCH TIME !?!?
ARE 2TB DRIVES COMPATIBLE WITH n7700 NAS/SAS !?
(Excuse my caps, but this delay is becoming a joke)
Well... I think that the Thecus support is really going worst...(was it good before?)...
How can Thecus add disks in the certified list and then remove some?...it's a big joke. there.
Why is Thecus not taking care of tickets/clients? Maybe they have to be a bit more reactive...
They realeased the N7700SAS and they are pushing forward some information as ...it's a dual core cpu....but I didn't found any SMP info in the kernel...(I checked in the normal 7700 as the firmware is the same, as far as I know..maybe I'm wrong will see)...so Maybe it's not compiled for two cores...
I'm running with the 1TB WD (all slots filled up), since more than 6 months now...no issues at all (Raid 6). So I'm quiet sure that the problem is coming from the Thecus itself...by having issues with large capacity disks.
I have no time to look deeper in the kernel..but why other NAS boxes have no issues? Is that not something that Thecus can do to improve a bit?
Hello,
I have 4 2TB WD RE4-GP (WD2002FYPS) in a Thecus N7700SAS in RAID 10.
It's not working with the latest firmware 3.00.04!!!!
Many RAID degrades and rebuilds, it takes hours to rebuild (more than 15 hours)
Create a tech ticket at Thecus but no response.
Now i'm trying to switch my WD HD's for Hitachi 2TB , downside: warranty for only 2+1 extra years, cost about EUR 8 extra)
John.
I have no problems with my seven WD RE- GP HDD´s in my N7700 til now since firmeware 2.01.10.14!!
I can stream videos and music with every format, filling the N7700 and so on...
But I confirm to the other user: Thecus should fixed the problem with WD before they support new HDD´s like Hitachi HDD´s
Best regards
It's not working with the latest firmware 3.00.04, everyday day a drop out
Back to 2.01.10.14 is not possible or is there al sulotion for this?
For firmware 2 there was a downgrade rom available! Somebody found for firmware 3?
When is the new firmware coming? It really sucks waiting and hearing nothing! I think thecus can't fix it
One thing for sure no more Thecus for me! Is there a downgrade ROM?
Hi doubeld1979,
did you expect an answer from Thecus support? Majority of tickets have no answers at all....Sorry to say but support is reaaaaaaaaallly bad. It's more or less no support.
I think that they don't really care about users. Instead of bulding new systems they must first do a stable firmware. Why other NAS don't have these kind of issues with Hds...
totally agree with both of you doubeld1979 and lexos
really a shame, a 7700 with 7 WD re4 power off for more than a week now and waiting......
waiting waiting.....
The real problem is that the box is built on a SOFTWARE raid
That can be slow, is really open to failure on any glitch, which is what people are seeing
I put 7 1TB disks in mine, and it now is the DR backup for my Dell
It works fine like that
By the way, I've had a SECOND WD 2TB RE4 drop out, spin down problem. WD replaced it no problem, but their QC must be off. Thats 2 failed drives in 1 month out of 9
Thank goodness for Raid-6 and hot spares
Finally It's working for me after updating to 3.00.07, its working now almost 10 days!
Thank you for the info doubeld1979, I'm going to try this one then, there is also the 3.00.07a now?
thanks again for sharing
its workig.. no tahts not true..
i receive today a ticket post back from thecus.
the probem is not fix!Quote:
Dear Sir,
Sorry to inform you about this information, so far we are still not fixing the WD 2TB issue.
(We have to remind you the WD2002FYPS didn’t be listed on Thecus HDD support list.)
Do you have the chance to move the WD 2TB to Seagate or Hitachi 1.5/2TB drives?
We recommend you moving to Seagate or Hitachi 2TB drive would be a better and efficient solution.
Here is the last HDD compatible list for reference,

Hello smack,
What do you mean by "problem not fix..."
Did you uptade all your WD2002FYPS with this new firmware 04.05G05, that I can't find enywhere so far?
I would like to give it a try, but can't find it on wd web site????
thanks for sharing
regards
I diddn't read properly :
This new firmware (04.05G05) is not downgrade compatible with the
current firmware (04.05G04)
Firmware 04.05G05 found http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?...14246&start=80
second post
How is going to update? ;)
It requires a boot floppy and a cd with the bin and exe on it
Boot the floppy, run the pgm on the cd
In my dell raid, i am doing the fw upgrade one at a time, let the raid rebuild (Raid-6), and do the next
One a day.
I just had 2 days ago an answer from thecus
"Dear Sir,
Thanks for your mail.
We strongly recommended backing up all of your data to an outside source. And then switch to either Hitachi or Seagate 2TB drives as listed on Thecus compatibility list. "
is any chance this new firmware could be a solution for my n7700 with 7 wd 2tb entreprise ???
Anybody try this already ?
thanks for sharing
well, I understand Thecus point on this, but well, for those people who already have the drives, I guess this isn´t nice at all :(
There are a few things I came up that might help:
Disable the power management of the drives within the web UI. If that doesn´t help, install the ssh and sysuser mod from thecus wiki and run that command for every drive in your array:
hdparm -B 254 -S 0 /dev/sda
etc.
That disables the power and accoustic managemnt, I suppose that should also help with drives flying out of the array. I do have a Thecus 5200Pro and a 7700 but not this type of HDD so I cannot try myself, but it is something that might work ...
Also before you do fiddle around with the modules and hdparm, backup your data! Better safe then sorry ;)
well still hard for me to understand how the upgrade of my hhd re4,
boot on the floppy: can i use hiren boot cd 10 and witch utility
run the program on the cd: whatdo i type only the program name or sort of command c:/...
Sorry, really nearby, but a little help for this so i can test with the new software
thanks for sharing
i tried everything to update the firmware, i am still looking for the right step...
damn old school floppys
edit found a HP usb tool to boot from usb stick
i now have updated all of my 4 drives with the 04.05G05 firmware and my thecus n7700 has the 3.00.07a hope this works for me!
Updated to 3.0.0.8 still having problems!
On Qnap Forum i read about disabling NQC on your drives!
Somebody Tried this? I dont know how?!
UPDATE: I read also to jumper pin 5-6 on WD2002FYPS, i have done this, no drop out yet 2 days running! Maybee is this the final fix!
