(Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
Hi Guys,
Have a quick question on NSync with the N7700.
Its always worked for me between two N7700's but just very slow... because it does a brand new Nsync each time, and not incremental.
If I have a 1.5TB folder... it takes 1.5TB each time. Takes forever,,, but it does do a 1:1 backup... and any deleted folders from Source.. get deleted on Target.... a true back up.. all good
Now with the new firmware they have incremental, as a feature for Nsync now.
?
How does this work... If I have files A-B-C on the Source and then A-B-C on the target... and its been synced already in the old method ('synchronize') --- then the 2x N7700's are current
NOw if i switch to incremental feature to save me time in backing up, just looking for the changed files...
and i know have A-B-C-D on the Source... it will push JUST the D file to target ? and save me time...
ok...
but if i delete one file from the Source... say file A ... then im left with B-C-D on the source.. and when it does incremental backup to the target N7700... the target does NOT get file A deleted?
so its not a 1:1 backup?
im confused.. sorry.. it seems that in incremental... the target server does not get any files deleted or replaced.. just added two... that could be a big mess.
what do you guys think?
sorry if this is convoluted

Re: (Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
Not sure about the new firmware but I'm using the rsync module to keep 2 N8800s synched and it works a treat - possibly worth looking at that?
Re: (Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
Dear phildog33,
In incremental synchro, it will only add new files from target to source.
For example:
Target 1-2-3-4-5 Source 1-2-3-4-5
If you cut 1-2-3 and add 6-7-8 in Target, after incremental synchro, you will get 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 in source.
I hope my above explanation is clear.

Re: (Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
Thanks Ivan,
I understand now
But why do you guys do incremental like this?
After one year.. the target server will be full of unused files and old data, that could happen from jsut a simple Name change of the file
1TB folder called MUSIC
then
1TB folder called MUSIC Library
and when you do incremental sync... it would store both files over on the target server
it seems to get very messy and doesnt work great

Re: (Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
Ivan,
Just an update im seeing with Synchronize vs Incremental speeds.
I have two N7700s over a gigabit network/switch.
I have a folder called Archive-3 which is all photos... at 1.7TBs (under the 2TB Nsync limit) and so many files.
I synced from N7700 #1 to #2 that Archive3 folder.. using synchronize.. which I understand is a 'start from scratch' method
Synchronize took 29 hours
I did the same test using Incremental in the Nsync box... Incremental only looks for changes, and applies those/adds those... it doesnt delete anything
Incremental took 18 hours
I tried incremental again.. thinking.. if I did it a second time, and it showed no changes, then it would Nsync very fast
Well..... it took exactly 18 hours again.
It's not gaining too much speed by using incremental. And on the 2nd time of incremental, with no changes made.. it should go very fast. But it doesnt
Any advice

Dear phildog33,
Are you using firmware v2.01.09? if not, please click here to get the latest firmware.
Once you have updated your firmware, pleaes try again to synchronize using incremental mode.

Yes I have the newest firmware, and tried the test with synch. And incremental
and the boost in speed was minor
check my results above

Re: (Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
im seeing that the incremental Nsync is not working.. it will take 15-18 hours to sync a folder with incremental... and then on the second time around...
should be much quicker. but it isnt...
taking the same time duration.. 15-18 hours

Re: (Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
has anyone tried incremental sync?

Re: (Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
has anyone tried the incremental sync?
it doesnt save much time for me...
maybe 25% savings in time, compared to the normal nsync
please check if you have the new firmware and use nsync

Re: (Nsync w n7700) Incremental vs Synchronize
Hello,
I have the same problems when making an incremental nsync from one N5200Pro to an other N5200Pro. It copies all the files from the scratch and not only the changed ones. Firmware is the latest one: V2.01.09. Any suggestions?
