Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Hi all,
I have just recently bought the Thecus N2200 (latest Firmware), it is connected to my Linksys WAG200G modem router.
Initial set up was ok (JBOD as only one 1TB Western Digital 7200 RPM in one of the slots). However I have encoutered the following problems:
1. Transfer speed from my wired networked PC and wirless networked PC to the THECUS can only acheive 10MB/second and 1.27MB/second respectivley? is that normal? if not, any suggestion??
2. Given the above slow speed, I had to copy my media files to N2200 using USB copy function. 181 GB took 4 hours to copy. There was no option to copy a certain type of medial files (music, movie) into a default created folders in the N2200. So all of my media files ended up in USBcopy folder. Now it has prompted to another question/problem.
3. After moving media files to the Thecus storage, I want to sort them out and put them in the right folders (MOVIE, MUSIC...etc.). I have noticed that the tranfers speed (between files and folders within the THECUS) is so so extremely slow, only around 850kb/second max. This is unbelievable.
I emailed THECUS support and was told "Moving files between folders on N2200 is throught network. Usually the speed on N2200 are :
Read: 35.57 MB/s
Write: 19.51MB/s"
I have not acheived even 1% of the said speed.
4. The unit dropped out all the time when I did multiple downloads from utorrent.
5. When streaming movie (750MB avi file) from PS3, it occasionaly popped up DLNA error message and I had to shut down the N2200 and restart it.
I am sorry for such a long post but very disappointed with this N2200 and really want to get rid of it unless someone can help me out. Could someone please help?
Many Thanks in Advance.

Dear danielx5,
I got my N2200 just yesterday and was not able to go anywhere above 600 KB/sec while copying to NAS. I was using wireless connection which was only utilising 10% of connection and local HDD was not a factor as I was using SSD drive. Tried copying small files, single big file - same result.
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
I have just received an email from Thecus support, and here is what I was told
"The speed we test is under simple network enviroment-directly connect N2200 to computer.
The real network enviroment will affect the speed of transfer.
Would you please try to test under directly connection? "
If i wants a direct connection with the said speed (Read: 35.57 MB/s
Write: 19.51MB/s). Why would I buy the NAS for in the first place? I just get a normal external portable hard drive.
This is truly a misleading product.
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Dear danielx5,
The reason we asked you to try connect your NAS directly with your PC is to see if there are any problem with the NAS itself, if the speed turns out to be normal when connected directly to the PC, then the buttleneck could be somewhere on your network settings.
Please contact our support again if you experience any further problems.

Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Ivan,
For the test to work, am I supposed to plug the ethernet cable from the NAS to my computer and what default IP address is used to access the NAS?
Thanks
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Dear danielx5,
The default IP for N2200 is 192.168.1.100, when connecting, please make sure your PC and NAS are in on the same IP segement.

Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Danilex5,
Make sure you set your computers IP as static and in the same range. Something like 192.168.1.200.
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Ivan,
My Thecus is always on static IP. (192.168.1.100)
I plug it directly into my laptop to run the test.
But I can not access it via its default IP.
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
It may be a stupid question but hey...
Is your network gigabit throughout? i.e. cat5e/cat6 with capable router/switch?
Speeds capped at 10Mb/s would indicate cat5 and 10/100Mb equipment?
Might be just coincidence tho...
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
My network is not Gigabit, router is Linksys WAG200G (4 10/100MB ports).
I use a Cat5 cable.
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Dear danielx5,
Have you set your PC's IP on the same segement as your NAS? like 192.168.1.101

Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
yes,
My computer IP 192.168.1.104.
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Have you used WD's diagnostic tool on the HDD? I was having a similar issue, my write speeds were maxing out at about 5MB/s, I'm RMAing the drive. A networked speed of 10MB/s is normal using a 10/100 router. If you want to take advantage of higher speeds, you'll have to upgrade to gigabit. I picked up a gigabit switch off newegg for 20 bucks and I'm averaging about 27MB/s.

So what kind of speed to you expect?
10/100MB is in theory capable of 12.5Mb/s right?
Not sure what are you asking here...

Spoon, you sound like an expert. Perhaps, you can help me with the above.......
Re: Thecus N2200 Slow Transfer Speed
Speeds between share will be slow that's correct.
Do you have something like Web File Manager/File Manager on your NAS? This should move files instantly from one place to another (mind you I'm not a Thecus user so just assuming, I've got QNAP TS-509)
Let me know.
Adrian
/EDIT
Quick browse through AJAX Demo Menu tells me that Webdisk is the equivalent of Web File Manager in Thecus so try that.
