    N7700 performance

Have my new N7700 setup with 5 x Western Digital Green 1,5TB disks in RAID 5, running XFS filsystem and strip size 1024kB. Building the raid probaly took about 6 hours.

On my PC im running Windows XP SP3, everything is connected with a gigabit network.

The problem is that I seem to get about the same transfer speed as my N5200, 20-30MB/s when dealing with large files over the network (samba). Unraring a big file on the Thecus N7700 seems to take about the same time as the N5200, no big difference.

I was hoping for a big perfomance differens but I dont seem to get the speeds I was reading about in reviews, why not? I want more speed thats why I upgraded...

Have you read about the issues with the Caviar Greens with the N7700? I've bought the exact same setup as you in the last couple of days (albeit 7 discs instead of 5).

From my PC to the N7700, I'm getting approx 60mbs transfer rate, on my N5200 its usually 25-30mbs.

Yes i know about the problems, my WD drives are so new so I cant set TLER on them. WD removed it for some reason.

But I hope Im one of the ones that will not have problems with this setup, I will do my best to test it before its replacing my N5200.

What strip size did you choose? You get 60MB /s with SMB?

    Re: N7700 performance

Ok did some more testing but this time not from my laptop, I used my more powerful HTPC with Windows 7 and the N7700 seems to perform like it should.

About 50MB/s when writing and about 75MB/s when reading, I guess thats how it should perform.

The CPU isnt using 100% (more like 30%) so Im guessing a cpu swap wont help me much to improve speed?

Maybe we should keep in contact about HDD trouble?

    Re: N7700 performance

Installed Windows 7 on my Laptop, but Im still missing 15-20MB/s read speed compared to my HTPC.

Could it be my Broadcom network adapter that cant handle more speed (possible tweaks?)? Its a Intel Dual Core 2 2GHZ CPU so the Laptop got ok perfomance (Zepto Znote 6625WD).

My Thecus N7700 dropped one disk after a couple of days of copying data from my N5200, rebuild again over the night and everything was ok.
