    N5200 Pro Hard Drive Recommendations?

With all the hard drive problems people are having with the N5200s. Can anyone recommend a 1.5 TB or greater capacity hard drive for the N5200? We already have the Western Digital 2 TB Drives (WD20EADS) but are running into some problems (ex: bad sectors being reported). Thanks.

I'm running a bunch of Seagate ST31500341AS in both N5200 Pro and N8800, and WD15EADS in another N8800. The original firmware in the N5200 flagged a bunch of erroneous bad sectors on a couple of disks, but they tested fine with the vendor tools - it later transpired that it was a firmware issue with the N5200, and a fw upgrade fixed the issue.

What firmware version fixed the issue? I tried 2.00.16, 2.01.09, and beta 2.01.10.6, which still report the bad sectors while the vendor tools test fine.

currently running 3.00.04.5 which was released as beta, then hastily pulled by Thecus. Oddly enough it's been the most stable by far... hopefully it'll get a release again soon.

    Hi Splash,

Have you tried the WD15EADS in the N5200? I want to recycle the ones I used in my Qnap TS-809, but I'm still with 2.0.14, so I may need to upgrade. Also, have you activated TLER on your WD15EADS or not?

Luckily I kept the 3.00.04.5 when it was released, so I can install it if necessary. To you have a changelist for it?

Edit: not necessary, I found this thread http://thecususergroup.proboards.com...ay&thread=3474

Sadly I haven't tried the WD15EADS in my N5200Pro, so I couldn't comment. Didn't bother with TLER either, though with hindsight I probably should.

Thanks for the reply. I'll let you know when I test them.

For the record, I tried the WD15EADS with the TS-809 with TLER enabled and had lots of problems (HD dropping out of the RAID) until I disabled TLER. So I guess it depends on the combination nas/fw/hd (and your luck, and how good the media is on your drives)....

Re: N5200 Pro Hard Drive Recommendations?

Just to say I did test the wd15eads (model 00r6b0 fw 01.00.a01) in my non 5200 pro and they seem to work fine (f/w 2.0.0.14, raid 5, ext3). I tried to format in xfs with 2.1.10.17 but after 30 hours to format the array the nas froze, so I went back to ext3/fw2.0. Performance seemed better on large files with xfs, even during array rebuild, but I need as much stability as I can on this nas.
So speed (ext3) is about the same as with my wd1000fyps re2 (35MB/s in SMB with Win7).
I get 5.5TB online, which isn't bad, but backup or raid 6 is highly recommended (24 hours to rebuild array).
