    N2200 Samba service not running

I have just put together a N2200 utilising (2) Hitachi Deskstar E7K200 (HDS72202) 2TB drives in Raid 1 configuration with a static IP address and V3.00.07E BIOS. When trying to create user folders the N2200 returns "Samba service is not running. Please restart Samba service". I have enabled Samba in the SMB/CIFS panel and it is reported to be "running" in the Status panel. Disabling Samba, rebooting, re-enabling returns the same error. The N2200 is only visible at present as a UPnP device but nothing else. Disabling UPnP doesn't make any difference. Anyone have a thought as to what might be going on here and how I go about fixing the problem? - my supplier says the On-Board chip is faulty and the N2200 should be returned - I would like to do this only if the machine is truly faulty.

    Regards

If your supplier is willing to replace the device, I would go with that. However if you want to see what is really happening, and attempt to fix it, then I would look at the .conf files for samba, usually located in /etc on a *nix system.

    Thanks for the quick response!
I am not all that familiar with Linux yet - to check the .conf file I would FTP into the box and then browse to the appropriate folder - what would I be looking for in the file that would point to a potential problem?

Thumbs up Re: N2200 Samba service not running

Seems that the solution to this problem was to reset the NAS back to factory defaults following the Firmware upgrade - not just the reboot as it suggests. Perhaps something doesn't / didn't quite sync when I gave the N2200 a fixed IP and put it on our LAN. The reset and letting it get it's IP from DHCP did the trick - after which I was able to assign it the fixed IP and create users and folders as required. Currently transfering 600GB+ of data from several other NAS boxes to it and all is working as expected.

    Hope this might benefit others.

    Cheers
