Public folders no longer public - N7700

I added a backup folder to my Thecus N7700 (3.00.07a) last night and created it as public but not browseable. I created a new user called "backup" with a password so windows backup could do it's thing (which for some unknown reason *requires* a network share to have a user/password access). All of a sudden all my public and browseable folders are now prompting for a username and password when previously they were actually public. This has happened from within Vista and Windows 7.

I have fiddled more with the permissions but I can't get the original folders to actually respect the "public" setting and be freely accessible on the network. Any suggestions about how to remove this username and password prompt and return the sharing to the way it was before?

Solved, just had to start from scratch and reset everything then it seemed to work again after a reboot.
