N8800 unresponsive, no raid, no login after update 3.00.08 > 3.00.08b

    Hello,
today we updated (as advised from Thecus) to 3.00.08b. After the update:

    1. No login (https and http)
    2. No Raid (though disks were recognized)

Even several boots did not help. We had to use Peters script to downgrade to 3.00.08 (many thanks to Peter again!!!). After downgrade we could log in again and the raid was assembled properly.

    Conclusion:
Slowly but surely we are convinced that these device are not suitable for professional use. They are toys. We lost data (and money and time) twice and had problems with firmware regularly. I can not understand that it is claimed to be "professional". The quality drops from device to device. IMHO Thecus should concentrate on reliable BASIC functions and not beautifully colored GUI. I prefer a running and stable NAS "in gray", instead of a beautifully colored crash info.
Sorry, but our patience has completely vanished - like our nerves.

I have had exactly the same problem. After downgrading the firmware the raid-arrays still exists but the names of my iscsi-targets are lost. I reimported my config but the names are lost and the targets are unactive.

    Hi,

I fix this very often issue on new 3.xx fw (did not start Web services), by loading all FW over USB with "factory_test.sh" script, see the thread here:
    forums.hexus.net/thecus-care-hexus/177787-has-anyone-been-brave-enough-try-new-v-3-00-08-firmware-yet.html
and be accurate to change FW file name in script in windows enviroment (just notepad, copy|paste thecnology).

I know, we are sorry we bought one too. We were very close to buying 12 7700SAS units! I was actually BEGGING to get a few early in August.

Then the 2tb WD disk debacle happenned (on the list, off the list).

Well, you get what you pay for. We bought a Dell MD1000 disk exp box and a Dell 1950 unit. We are running MS Windows Server 2008 R2 with a VM under Hyper/V running Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2008 (for iScsi targets throughout our network). The MD1000 is populated by 8 2tb drives in a raid 6 config with a hot spare (5 active drives, 2 for parity, 1 for hot spare in case the WD 2tb stay flaky (which they haven't BTW))

The total price for those devices and sw was about $4500, about $2700 more than the Thecus (plus disks, of course), BUT IT WORKS!!! Never had a problem, except 2 failed disks (replaced by WD without problem). The added advantage is that the MD1000 can connect in split mode to TWO computers/NAS units (15 slots!), so the cost for hardware can be half as we need multiple NAS units.

    Hello Philhu,
I totally agree on that, but I have expected at least a minimum of quality.
At the moment we have experienced a 75% probability to turn your NAS unresponsive or to suffer from data loss when doing a firmware update (on N8800, N5200, N5200Pro - over 3 Years now). I think, that is even a poor level for a "entrance" system - or do I expect too much?

UPDATE: And again the same disaster. FW 03.00.08c caused the same problems. RAID and access to GUI were lost.
FW 3.00.08c was released to solve exactly these problems, but nothing improved. I think, any word about quality is superfluous!

Re: N8800 unresponsive, no raid, no login after update 3.00.08 > 3.00.08b

The only Firmware which runs fine is 3.00.07a at my Thecus N8800. With Firmware 3.00.08c my Thecus is also unresponsible. Now the Thecus runs and I will wait a few Months before i rerun a firmware-update. The last one took me three days of time. I startet a firmware-update because the thecus crashed on concurent access to i-scsi-targets. To my surprise this Problem is fixed.
