    Can't remove encrypted RAID volume.

    Hi

can anybody tell me how to remove a encrypted raid volume without the encryption key? The encryption key is not available anymore.

Edit raid volume and then remove raid volume dosen't work, as you can't enter the edit menu without the encryption key.

    Hardware NAS8800SAS
    Firmware 3.01.00.4

    Thanks

Have you tried formatting each drive separately? I'm guessing you don't want any of the data off the drives. Or Fdiskm does Fdisk still work on sas drives?

Re: Can't remove encrypted RAID volume.

Of course wiping the drives in an external device with fdisk or any other tool should help. But as this is a network device and it is located in a off site data center, I was looking for a solution that works remotely.

I found a solution, even though it is a hack: Create a second raid volume without encryption. Then edit the new raid volume, change the value of the RAID ID input field to match the other encrypted raid volumes id, and select "Remove RAID".

It is really annoying to see that making the gui looking fancy and shiny has more priority than making it usable. :-/

Re: Can't remove encrypted RAID volume.

Can you not simply drive over to where it is with a caddy? One of the reasons for encrypting raid arrays is to stop someone without access to the key from doing what you want todo.
The Thecus NAS has a linux os on the box (I'm guessing as most do) I am also going to assume you have root / admin perliverages on the NAS (or you shouldn't be doing this) can you not SSH to it and fdisk from the command prompt?
